Easy Holiday Hike - the River Trail - from Betzwood Trailhead to Pawlings Road

This trail hugs the north side Schuylkill River. A nice flat course with beautiful foliage on one side and the river on the other. Trains on the other side of the river make their presence known every half hour or so. This hike is a "there and back" and will be approximately 7 miles in length. Allow 2-3 hours to hike the trail. This is a scenic and easy hike with no hills. The trail, mostly gravel, always has the river in sight. You may want to bring water, snacks, camera . . .

GPS Coordinates -[masked],[masked]

Finding the trailhead is easiest when you picture it's location relative to the highways.
If coming from Rt 363 - Trooper Rd, go across Rt 422 and continue. When you come to the end of that short road, make a right into the Betzwood Trailhead parking area.
If coming from 422 West from Valley Forge, get off at the Trooper exit. Stay to the left. Follow the road to the left again and when you come to the end of that short road, make a right into the Betzwood Trailhead parking area.

Look for a Dark Green Audi tt with a roof rack.

Try to arrive by 10:45 AM. We will leave promptly at 11:00AM.

Hope to see you there!!!

I think I'm in the right place - 1st lot. Where are you meeting?

Ben, thanks so much for organizing this hike. However, my experience tells me that if the weather is good the parking lots at Betzwood would be filled at the time of your hike. I suppose if everyone got there early they could wait for a spot to open. But everyone should keep in mind that I have seen rangers give out tickets to those parked on the grass.
If the footbridge attached to the 422 bridge across the Schuylkill River is open (??) an alternative would be to meet in front of the restrooms in the large lower visitor center parking lot. From there you would start walking up the entrance road. When you see the intersection with the road that goes up to the upper parking lot look for a worn path to the left through the field to the paved trail. Then go left the short distance to County Line road and cross over 23 straight to Trooper rd. At the end find the footbridge to the right. Once over a left onto the SRT gets to Betzwood. 1/2 mile extra each way.

Hi John. Thanks for the info. I've been to Betzwood 5-6 times and didn't have a problem parking. It "may or may not" be extra crowded due to the holiday. If it is, we all should find a "legal" place to park close by. If it's not close and some of us need to "hike to the hike", just call the number above if you need extra time. Also, car pooling will of course help with parking problems.
