H3 Beginner Hike # 2 - Schuylkill River Trail @ Spring City

This is the second Beginner Hike scheduled during the month of June.  The objective is to walk (3) three miles on this "exploratory" hike on a trail of mostly crushed stone, although selected areas have been paved that make up a portion of the Schuylkill River Trail.  We will start at the Spring City Entrance, and walk 1.5 miles down and 1.5 miles back for a total of 3 miles.  See the trail map below. We will follow the red trail line that borders the Schuylkill River.

Please plan to arrive at 5:45PM for introductions and count-off, with a prompt scheduled departure for 6:00PM.  The hike will last 90 minutes.

Situated among a backdrop of manufacturing, a variety of wildlife can be seen on this trail to include: deer, birds of all species, and flying fish...usually coming out of the river :).  The trail is friendly to runners, walkers, and bikers.

The Schuylkill River Trail is a regional, multi-municipal effort involving Counties, local municipalities, and conservation organizations. When completed, the trail will ultimately span 128 miles, and connect Pottsville and Schuylkill County with the Delaware River in Philadelphia.  When completed in Chester County, the trail will parallel the Schuylkill River from the Route 422 bridge at Pottstown, south to the Route 29 bridge into Mont Clare.

Historically the trail sits on the site of the former Pennsylvania Railroad track.  The area was a key component to the manufacturing age that took place in the Philadelphia area from the late 1800s through the turn of the century.  The track was dismantled in 1982 after having been abandoned year’s prior.  Join me as we explore this interesting place in history.

As always...PLEASE REMEMBER TO HYDRATE BEFORE THE HIKE AND BRING PLENTY OF WATER, snacks and other essential items you may need.

You may also want to consider bringing a first aid kit, walking stick(s), field guides, sunglasses, sun block, insect repellent, binoculars, and a camera.

For those with Asthma, Allergies or Special Conditions...Please Bring Inhalers, Allergy Meds, Epi Pens and Anything Else That You May Need and Let Me Know At The Start of The Hike.

Dogs on leashes are Welcome.

This hike was so much fun! If you told me six months ago I would be leading a hike, I would have laughed. Thank you to:
Jen- documenting my documenting for tracking distance
    Laurene- great co-photographer
    George- going the extra mile
Rob- keen eye for mile markers
    Richard- knowledge transfer
(We learned the local water company uses 3 Million gallons of water per day from the Schuylkill River for its supply).
and Mike- for sweeping us along!

Total of 4.11 Miles from the train station, to the trail and back, finishing in 1:15:06 @ an average of 18 minutes per mile with high humidity. Enough exercise to warrant a post hike social of Cajun fare at The French Quarter Bistro in Royersford!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
