To Mala, I'm Richard Singer, I was sitting on your right side directly next to you. I am a musician using computer programs and synthesizers. I also have bipolar a d kidney failure. But that is not relevant . I'm interested in your experience with your religious involvement and what you said about gender separation at your 'Group' and what the content of your involvement. Was it about a comited religion. I'm very interested in religious beliefs.

I know we didn't get to talk about the privacy issue for very long last night, but I was acutely aware of it today as three separate incidents came up today for me. One was in relation to my insurance company assuring me that my information would remain "private" (as I sent information over the internet!). The second was a "notification of privacy risk" at the bottom of an e-mail I received as part of a national organization to which I belong (basically telling us that since it was e-mail privacy could not be guaranteed). The third was my own hesitation in sharing something on Facebook to a group. I felt I needed to check with the person before doing so otherwise I would have shared more "privately". John, you mentioned that both topics were about the self, but I think that these incidences were very social/public in nature. At least they have the potential to have an impact beyond a few people. I realized how pervasive issues of privacy are since you posed the question, Greg.

Gina, I hear you! Fundamentally, we all want to feel safe and I think you're right about privacy issues constructed to do that for us--that our personal information is safe (both on an interpersonal level and a larger social level).

oops, I pressed the return button before I was done. Yes, I agree that it's interesting that, for me, the conversation made me pay attention to the privacy issues more the next day. I love when that happens. Regarding the gender question, I realized the way the conversation went my question wasn't so much about GENDER but about SEXUALITY. I have all of you to thank for that. Perhaps another time...be well everyone.

Granted, both issues occupy a societal space. Our focus, however, was the freedom/right of choosing/identifying the self with a gender and the control, or lack control over the dissemination of personal information by the individual. We did not spend much time on the biology of gender that is out of an individual's control, for example, or the societal benefits of redefining privacy as has occurred in the past 12 years; the current Homeland Security PR campaign with the motto "If you see something, say something" being a case in point. So yes, there are societal ramifications to both issues but our self-interests were understandably primary in our discussion as is also true of your three examples.

Social questions arise always in the context of a problem. The question of privacy came up for discussion because privacy has become problematical for individuals and for society.

This was my first SC. I just realized both topics were about the self.
