NoVA Recumbent Riders, aka Have Recumbent, encourage all recumbent cyclists to join us on July 4th 2013, from 9:15am to noon. We did this last year and had a great time!

No costumes necessary; 4th-of-July-themed bike decorations expected - the theme this year is "We the People..."

We had a good turnout - I counted 17 recumbents - in spite of 6 no-shows. Also, this year they put us in front of the horses (and elephants, and whatever else), which I really appreciated.

Thanks for setting this up Tom, it was a lot of fun!

Sorry about the late back out. We lost an IPhone 5 and are trying to find the phone.

What time will the group be heading out? Do you have an idea of our number? We got a really late start and may not make it.

Lyn hasn't recovered enough from surgery. She won't be able to handle the day.

I have to pull out due to a scheduling conflict; hope to ride with the group sometime later this summer. Have a great time at the parade!

Ah, sorry about that - just saw the "12:00 noon" end time.

    July 2, 2013

I may have missed this, but is there an estimated time for when the parade (or at least our part of it) ends? Thanks!

Sounds great - thanks for the clarification. See you then.

Let's meet at 09:15 - when we actually join the parade is unpredictable. It depends on how quickly everything before us moves along.

We can use the waiting time to finish (or repair) bike decorations, chat, visit other units, etc.

10680 Main St. is the address of the dark rectangle in the upper left corner of the page near the big blue arrow. I didn't give an address for our actual waiting location because some streets will be closed and some may be one-way, and your GPS will be no good for getting there.

So, if you're unfamiliar with Fairfax City, use your GPS to get to "10680 Main St.," then follow the arrows labeled "Recumbents Follow blue arrows" down Judicial Dr. and make a left on Page Ave. You can park at "Parking Garage B," unload, and bike up to the "Divisions 4,5,6,7" lot, where we will all meet and wait until it's time for us to join the parade.

Or, you can drive over to the "Divisions 4,5,6,7" lot and unload there, but after unloading you must immediately leave the lot. Then, go back and park in "Parking Garage B" and walk back to "Divisions 4,5,6,7" lot.

Sorry, the address is 10680 Main St.

Tom, I downloaded your recumbent file. Is our group meeting at 10608 Main St.? What time should we arrive? Is that a parking lot? Thanks.

Fyi if you follow Tom's link to the 4 parade pdf docs, on the left hand side of the webpage is a link to a video of last years parade. Our recumbent group is near the end and is approx 1:46:03 into the video. You can use the slider on the video viewer to advance to around that position.

I've uploaded a map (ParadeRouteandLine-upMap Recumbents.PDF) with a little more info for our Recumbent Group in the "Files" section of this site (go to More/Files).

Mark - tell your cheering section that we really appreciate their cheers! It was a high point for me last year.

    Hi Frank,

Sorry for the delay. I thing it would fine for your kids to ride regular bikes with us. The parade committee requires that each unit in the parade provide entertainment value, and our trikes, just by being unusual, satisfy some of that requirement. On the other hand, they expect that a regular bike would be sporting some serious decorations!

  • Frank

Are non-recumbent-riding family members allowed to ride with the group?

Rode in the parade last year. Looking forward to this year. I have a cheering section in the parade route for us.

I've missed a few good rides (Marsha and I got back last night from 17 days in Italy). Tomorrow I will go to the post office where I expect to see a fat envelope with all the Parade info. It will likely be similar to last year and I plan to post here the maps, times, etc., sometime late Monday.

Hi Marvin, I have a herniated disk and need to ride recumbent. If suggest she try out a variety of recumbents before buying one. They are not all the same and she'll know what feels right when she is in it. Then, look in Craig's List if you'd prefer a used trike. We bought ours at Bikes in Vienna - ask for Al.

Is this a good place to find a used recumbent trike to purchase? My wife has MS and a recumbent bike seems like a good option.
