Hike the Maunawili Trail! -- Moderate Forest Hike

  • Dec 14, 2013 · 8:15 AM
  • This location is no longer available

Description:
We're going to go oh "about" five miles or so up the Maunawili Trail, turn around and come back.  This should take between 3-4 hours.  This is a mountain and rain forest trail dotted with waterfalls, streams, and sweepingly majestic vistas of the Windward side of Oahu from towering volcanic cliffs to forests to the Pacific Ocean. At times, the rainforest ferns and tropical plants are so lush and gigantic that you feel you've wandered into the land of the dinosaurs. Great for advanced as well as novice hikers who are sensible and careful. After, we'll head into town for some Cheap Eats.

This is suitable for intermediate or even well-prepared novice, as it's not too steep.  Make this your longest hike!

Trail Length: About 3-4 hours, depending on weather and trail conditions

Elevation Gain:  500 Feet

Directions: From Honolulu go 6.6 miles down the Pali Highway: towards Kailua. Just after going through the tunnels, there is a hairpin turn. Begin to look for the parking area (marked scenic overlook), which is just after the hairpin turn. Park in this turnout. The trailhead is adjacent to the parking area.

Terrain: Varied. Wet gulches to open forest.  Hiking boots recommended

Dangers:  Minimal slippery footing, mosquito maybe.  Bring Water and Repellent

Dogs:  Are allowed (always on leash)

Hi. I'm new to this group and excited to get out tomorrow. I'm driving from Kailua and a little confused as to where the lookout is.

bruce A is coming from kaneohe. if you do drive, it's like bob said, you have to go toward town through the tunnels and make a u turn so you're on pali hwy going back to the windward side. then right during the hairpin turn before the kam hwy intersection with stoplights there is a small parking lot.
