3rd NYC Health Games Meetup.
This time the topic is: How games and robots that utilize game mechanics can assist in rehabilitation of burn and brain injury patients
1. Integration of Gaming Principles in the Acute Stroke Population – Grace Kim, MS, OTR/L, Research Occupational Therapist at Weill-Cornell Medical Center. Grace will discuss the utilization of upper body robotics therapy and the Wii for the treatment of stroke patients in a hospital setting. The clinical advantages and disadvantages of both systems will be highlighted and directions for future rehabilitation game design will be explored.
2. The Utilization of Nintendo® Wii™ During Post-Burn Rehabilitation – Sam Yohannan, MS, Senior Researcher and Physical Therapists at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Sam will present results from studies investigating the effects of playing the Wii™ to assist post-burn rehabilitation and its relationship to pain, anxiety, and movement and daily function, including return to cooking after kitchen burns. The pilot study was awarded the 2011 Clinical Research Award and will be published in the Journal of Burn Care and Research in 2012.
