Hike the Orange Loop at Tiger Creek Preserve

Join us for a 7 mile hike along the Highlands Trail at Tiger Creek Preserve.  We will meet at Mini Mac's in Babson Park, then carpool to the trailhead of Tiger Creek.

Bring plenty of water, snacks, sun/bug protection and good hiking shoes.

Please note: this is a moderate to strenuous hike as we will be traversing sandhills and in some places walking in sugar sand.

I would like to leave Mini Mac's at 8:45 so that we can start the hike at 9AM.

It was a beautiful morning for a hike. I saw lots of wildflowers and butterflies. I met new people and had a great time. Thanks David!

I would like to do the hike but I have realized my limitations. I had a serious auto accident quite a few years ago & find that I can walk four to five miles with increasing discomfort to my upper legs. Beyond four & or five miles it can be quite aggravating. I can ride a bike forever but I have learned to know my limitations in reference to walking. I do, however, plan on going to Bok Gardens that day. I hope that some of you may be able to take that in for I feel you will have a good time. As I have mentioned earlier, go on line to Bok Gardens to find out just what is going on. Boktoberfest is a very relaxing time, they have a very large parking lot and at this event last year I think they had shuttle service. From early afternoon, onward, it can get quite hectic but just wandering around the gardens is quite enjoyable. I had a seasons pass last year & the gardens are noted for some enjoyable concerts. Some of the most enjoyable concerts take place on the lawn at the bell towers.

I'm going to hike up to the bench at the beginning of the loop, lay on my mat under a tree and wait for the group to circle back around, then hike back out.

I have a very well behaved mutt who wants to come too. She is an experienced hiker and is always well received in groups. I will of course bring a leash and poop bags. Any objections? Some of you may have met her at the Withlacochee River in July when we hiked with you guys there.

Does anyone want to carpool from Lakeland? I live near the Southgate Publix. I'd love to go to Bok Tower afterwards.

Great! Do you want to meet at Southgate Publix at 7:50am? I usually park near the corner of S. Florida and Oak. I have an old blue Civic hatchback.

Ok. See you 7:50 AM on the 19th. I drive an aging silver Hyundai Sonata with a bike rack.

Is parking limited at the trailhead?

    October 7, 2013

    • David W.

Yes, the parking area can accommodate about 10 cars without parking down the access road. Never know how many other cars besides ours will be there as this is a fairly popular hiking area.

I have realized I scheduled two similar hikes a couple months apart. Therefore, I will give the group the option, because of the heat, to hike the shorter Big Sand Pine (Blue) Loop and the Heron Pond (Red) Loop or the Highlands Trail (Orange) Loop. The first two will make for approximately 5 miles. Then when it is cooler in December we can tackle the longer orange loop. Or we can hike the Highlands Loop both times.

Bok Towers Boktoberfest is also on the 19th of October. Free admission till 6PM. I have been there in the past & it is a very nice take. They have about 30 &/or 40 booths set up with everything from plant sales to music, food, etc. It may be a nice way to end the day. Go for your walk in the morning and then head to Bok Towers. Go on line to Bok Towers and check out the venues. It is a very nice place to stroll around & the flowering plants are amazing.
