Day hike - Saddle Creek Park to Tenoroc and back

Come out and join us for a hike from Saddle Creek County Park into the state Tenoroc section.  We will hike approximately  5 to 6 miles. We will be going out on one direction on the two blue loops to the orange trail.  After crossing Saddle Creek Road, we will be hiking to the four benches.  At the benches, we will be stopping for snack/and or lunch.  On the return, we will be following the other sides of the blue loops. On the way back, we will be stopping at the observation tower.

Hike should take between three and four hours.  The pace will be moderate (a 2 on a scale of 1-3).  There are some hills but nothing too serious.

Please wear supportive footwear or good hiking shoes & BRING WATER.  Bug repellent is advised as well as sun protection.  Bring snacks and/or lunch.

Please note, as you are doing a Florida Trail chapter activity, it is not necessary to pay for admittance.  If coming to area on your own, please be advised there is a $3/person fee.  Self-pay station is found at beginning of trail.  State trail is only open Friday through Monday.

Link to pdf flyer re trails below:

If you look at that info, we will be first going on the east side of the Lake Loop (the part the brochures describes as "Roller Coaster Trail").  We then go onto the east side of Flatwoods Loop. From there, we will be using the Connector Trail until we come to the four benches.  On the return, we will be on the west side of the loops.

‎There is also good info on following link. Author said trails connect with Green Swamp.  That maybe inaccurate.  Also note the comments made re trail overgrown.  We recently did a major trail maintenance.  Trails are in good shape ANd observation tower has been reopened.

If you follow the map link from (by clicking on the emblem next to the event address - Saddle Creek Park), you will be taken to a spot close to where we start. The link is to the county office, which is just after the road splits  The office & maintenance buildings are on the left. The parking area for the hike is further down the road to the left,  past the restrooms on the right. There is a map kiosk to the left of where the trail starts in the woods.  The start of the trail is on the left side of the road.

Saddle Creek Park - 3716 Morgan Combee Rd. , Lakeland. However, I enter off of 92 (Memorial Blvd.) at Saddle Creek Park Rd. Follow the signs to "Nature Trail". Shorts and tennis shoes (sturdy) are ok. I recommend a day pack or fanny pack with snacks or lunch, plenty of water/drink, bug repellent (just in case) and sunscreen (although a lot of the trail is under tree cover).

Would someone please confirm the address where we are meeting for tomorrow's hike? Also, are shorts and tennis shoes appropriate attire for this hike? This is my first meeting so sorry for all the questions.

Thanks Jan....I've been breaking in a pair of hiking boots for a few weeks now. They give me some extra ankle support. I hate wearing long pants right now due to the heat. But I have some if needed. I'll check out the gaiters you mentioned.

We will not be anywhere near the Blue trail at picnic lake. There are some hills (spoils left over from the phosphate mining). Nothing serious. There may be some grass but usually it's not a problem. This is a beautiful Florida hike. I take all my northern friends here when they visit and they love it. We are expecting rain today and tomorrow so foliage may be a bit damp. I wear gaiters but they aren't a requirement. Gaiters are a type of protective clothing for a person's ankles and legs below the knee. Just make sure you have sturdy footwear and you should be fine.

Two weekends ago I did my first tenoroc loop from picnic lake. Hills had been mowed. Straight areas had grass up to my knees. How will it be this Saturday leaving from saddle creek park? High grass or mowed or both? Will we have hilly and flat ateas?

The Lost Lake Loop has "hills". Tenoroc was a phosphate mine. They piled the tailings which have given us hills (by Florida standards). Where they mined are now the lakes.

Hike is a nice mix of surfaces is and is more challenging than most of the hikes in Polk County.

Please note, re regular hiking fee. If you are a Florida Resident and over 65, there is no fee for hiking at any trail at Tenoroc.

PLEASE NOTE THE LOCATION FOR THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM Lower Green Swamp to Saddle Creek (Tenoroc) in Lakeland. The trail at Lower Green Swamp has too many flooded areas at this time.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
