I only looked at the "biting end" of this creature while we were out there and cared about it's behavior which made me say "cottonmouth." When I got home I was like, "polka dots? What snake has polka dots?" I do not have confirmation yet but believe this to be a FULL GROWN dusky pygmy rattler who was pretending to be a cottonmouth for whatever sarcastic reason he may have had. I'm working to get a positive ID of the snake for us at this time.

Golly gee willikers! That was a dusky pygmy rattlesnake. I had never ever seen one before. Very un-rattlesnake like creature, that was. FL snakes will always keep you on your toes ;) I would have fully expected a rattler of any make or model to curl up and give a little warning to us as much as we were "pestering" it. This one was so big I can only theorize that it was very old and too tired to care what we were doing.

See you should have let me touch the tail with my stick, then we would have known what it would do.Monika

Hahaha, that totally did cross my mind after the fact. All I know is the golden rule of poisonous snakes... never &*$# with them and you never get bit :)
