Ernie Castiaux leads today. Spring is all around now. We'll head over to the more remote areas of Mt.Tam. This will be a moderate hike of eight or nine miles.

April 6, 2014 – 10:00

Rock Springs Trail Head.   ( Pan Toll Rd & Ridgecrest Blvd, )

Today’s hike is into the deep quiet forest of Northwest Tamalpais to one of the Mountain’s treasures, Hidden Lake.  We begin along the Simmons Trail down to Barth’s Retreat [masked]) then continue down the Kent trail to have our lunch near Hidden Lake.  After lunch, we will return up Kent and pass by Azalea Meadow and through chaparral with splendid views North and West towards Point Reyes.  The trail crests and we return to woodland taking a break at Potrero Meadow and then continue along Benstein Trail to return to our cars.

This is a Moderately Paced Hike.

Estimated Distance of Hike: Approximately 8.5  miles

Elevation Gain:  Approximately 950 feet

Leaders:  Ernie Castiaux  ([masked]).

Cancellation:  Rain does not cancel.

Bring: lunch, liquids (the equivalent of 2 liters of water), and warm clothing. Park rules prohibit alcoholic beverages. Recommend well-fitting boots for traction and ankle support.  Hiking poles may be helpful.

Cost:  Free parking.  Arrive early to ensure a parking spot.

Carpools: I recommend you arrange your own carpools where it is more convenient for you.

Under the Discussion Tab see the, "Generic Details of What to Bring". Also links to detailed driving directions are provided to all the Trailheads.

I scouted this trail yesterday. Due to the recent rains Hidden Lake is now covering the trail. Instead of having lunch there, we will proceed another 20 minutes down to Lake Alpine which is quite lovely.
We should have lunch around 12:30/45. Eat a hearty breakfast if you normally have lunch earlier. The trails are not as muddy as one would expect due to the recent rain. See you at the trail head. Be sure to allow enough time if you have not been to Rock Springs previously. Ernie (Hike Leader)
