I'm currently writing a curriculum to be approved by the Boys and Girls Club of Irvine. I will expand the program to Los Angeles, but Irvine is the first place I've found acceptance so far. I am looking for people who can help me make this program happen with suggestions, volunteers, financial support and kids to join the group. The group is schedule to start in mid September. I'll keep you updated.
My vision is to provide a regularly scheduled meeting for children to attend at the Boys and Girl Club in Irvine where they can relate to one another, to the speakers and learn to have positive outlooks on their current situation and their future. I'd like them to have someone to ask questions and get unbiased answers from.
I'd like to focus on junior high-age kids at first. That'll give me a good idea of how to treat the younger and older groups.
I don't want this to be a place where kids are forced to be a part of "the system" so I don't want the courts having any control over any aspect of the program.
Children raised in divorced homes are used as pawns, are middle men, they're manipulated, they feel feelings of guilt, frustration, a loyalty to one parent or the other, and harbor many other feelings that can be subsided with a support group that is not affiliated with their parents or the court system. I want kids to have a place to relate to others in the same situation and to listen to adults, or older teens who have gone through similar situations and survived.
Being a product of an extremely long, multi-faceted, trying divorce as a child, I feel that I am in a unique position to explain that divorce isn't the end of the world to children who are going through what I did. I've seen it all... I experienced the unfortunate realities of violence, lawyers, evaluators, therapists, judges, ex partes, restraining orders, lying, sibling separation, blackmailing, etc. And I came out having a very positive view of the world despite the traumas I experienced. I want to share my positivity with kids and give them hope.
I need help with 2 things right now:
1. Feedback on my curriculum (email me and I'll send it to you)
2. Kids to be enrolled in the program (scheduled to start late sept or early oct)
3. Volunteer teachers (you do not need credentials) to help me run the sessions.
Thanks for your interest!
Julia
