Hello again for some and the first time for others. I am returning to the book club as a co-organizer with Mike. When I started the Hemingway Book Club three years ago I had no idea if anyone would even show up. Much to my surprise and delight we formed a great group of readers who really delved into his works. When I stepped down last year for work reasons I was thrilled that Mike stepped up to take over its leadership. Mike was ready to step down--it's a lot of work keeping this thing going--but we've decided to continue the group in an altered form.

The book club is changing and I hope to see faces old and new coming to the Ukrainian East Village Restaurant on the last Sundays of the month in 2013. The biggest change is to to group’s focus. The first year we read only Hemingway, the second and third were a mix of Hemingway and his peers.

Beginning this month, the group’s focus will be to read the Modern Library’s Top 100 book list. This is a list created in 1999 of the best english language novels by a panel of editors selected by Random House. Many of the books and authors we’ve focused on in the Hemingway book club are on that list. It’s a great opportunity to reread books you may have read in high school, to read works you’ve heard of but never got around to, and a few that may be completely new. (At the rate of one book per month, we’ll be done by 2021!)

You can check out the list here:

We’ll be modeled after this group in Albany, NY:

To make the transition, we’ll be sticking with Hemingway this month, reading “The Sun Also Rises.” It’s my favorite of his novels and one I can read again and again.

I will be leading the group on odd months and Mike will lead the group on even months. We will also begin using a poll to select books, starting with the March reading.

More updates and information will be coming. I'm looking forward to reading lots of great works in 2013.

best regards,

Ted Phillips
