Hike Niagara Gorge (Saturday)

  • *** Cancelled due to rain  ***

We will try again, July 13.

Drive out to Niagara Glen Nature Reserve and hike the Gorge.

    Niagara Glen Nature Reserve

This hike actually is fairly short, but it is up and down a gorge, with occasional flat pats. Bring your hiking boots. Bring a hiking pole. Do not forget your camera.

    See detail description here:
    http://hphc.ca/NiagaraGorge9.html

The driving instructions have been updated to reflect the correct date, and Google Maps' driving instructions.

    Google Map direction:
    http://goo.gl/maps/V61sZ

    Carpool information:
    http://hphc.ca/ShowingUp.html

Be prepared for a late return; the hike will finish by 4pm, but most hikers will want to stay in the region for a bit after the hike, either window shopping or wine tasting at Niagara-on-the-Lake. If you need to return directly after the hike, please let us know at carpool time, and we will arrange the rides accordingly.

Hike carefully. The big problem will be slippery rocks.

Hello, I am new in this group so I have 2 questions:
    1. I need a spot in a car how I have to do?
    2. I am new in town to do you know where can I buy hiking shoes?

    June 28, 2013

    • Howard G.

Hiking boots are available at Mountain Equipment Coop, or at SAIL. You want to buy these things from hiking enthusiasts. Also, you want to wear them around for a couple of days so that you do not get blisters. You have reminded me to visit Shopper's Drug Mart to pick up Moleskins. :)

      June 28, 2013

    • Mae

I wear Nike hiking boots that I bought 20 years ago. Yes, they were put back together with some glue by the shoe repair man.

      June 28, 2013

  • Kanita K.

If this is our first time with this group, do we bring a fee?

    June 27, 2013

    • Kanita K.

Also- I really hope the weather holds out!

      June 28, 2013

    • Howard G.

We would appreciate you joining the club. Membership is $15, and it is good to the end of December. We will have a fall schedule. At the rate things are going, we will have a summer schedule.

      1 · June 28, 2013

  • Howard G.

We are watching the weather for today and tomorrow. If it rains too much, we will have to cancel this hike again. Keep checking this space, and/or the website.

In the worst case, July_13 will be our make-up date.

This trail is dangerous in the rain. What's the plan if the weather doesn't clear up? Also, can I meet you there? I will be coming from Hamilton.

Please check this website in the morning; a notice will be posted if there are any changes in plans.

is the garlic minced, pureed, or whole cloves?
I just bought some bug spray.
Looking forward to the hike, but as usual, I'll need a lift.
Anyone not staying for a drink/bite to eat afterwards?

    June 27, 2013

    • Mae

I am bringing whole garlic cloves. I need to apply some of the liquid on to my clothes or skin. Need to google and do more research on this.

      should I bring butter?

Are hiking shoes necessary? Would running shoes work?

    June 26, 2013

    • Lili

Hi Jonathan I know it says hiking shoes recommended but I don't have hiking shoes. Can i wear my running shoes instead?

      June 26, 2013

    • Jonathan

Hi Lili: Hiking boots are for your safety and protection. It is especially important for a difficult trail like Niagara Gorge. If you twist your ankle, you have to find someone to carry you up the steep gorge.

  • Carolynn

Anyone want to make it a 2-day event? Between the wine options in the region, and the tourist traps in town, I would totally consider stretching this out, either camping style (because "why not?") or cheap hotel (yeah, that sounds bad and sketchy, but it's not what I meant to imply - cheap in lieu of five-star is all). Fallsview almost always seems to have groupon kind of deals...

    June 10, 2013

    • Howard G.

I do not think that there are two days of good hiking in the area. There are lots of winerys to check out by car or bicycle. I am interested in camping trips, but these would be up north somewhere.

Hi, I am new to this group. Very excited about this trek! I would need a ride. I don't have a hiking pole either. Will I be able to manage without that?

    June 23, 2013

    • Mae

You don't need a hiking pole. Several hikers just picked up some sticks in the woods and used that as hiking poles.

      1 · June 23, 2013

    • Howard G.

Hiking poles are not necessary, but they are very nice. Niagara Gorge is a good place to have one.

      June 24, 2013

  • Emine D.

Sounds like a fun hiking experience, see you there.

    June 24, 2013

  • Jonathan

Notice to west end drivers: If you are offering a west end carpool, please consider a subway station with a passenger pick up and drop off. eg. Kipling station. Notice to hikers: if this is your first time hiking with us, please come to our carpool location and meet everybody. We do not recommend taking rides from strangers.
