Note: Please review hike information prior to RSVP. Hike will start at Hogpen Gap. To avoid doing a shuttle, this will be an out and back hike and will be approximately 13 miles. Hogpen Gap to Neels Gap and back.
This section of the AT has several overlook views.
This will be a difficult hike, even if we go slow. If you are not capable of doing a long hike with elevation gains over 2,600 feet do NOT attempt this hike. If you are an experienced hiker, I would ask that you keep within the group to help with the new hikers.
Bring a lunch, trail mix, snacks, water.
Be sure to bring hiking poles, hiking boots, rain gear just in case it rains never know about the weather. Bring some light gloves, head covering. Also bring a small flashlight even though the hike should be completed well before dark.
We will meet at the Buford Park and Ride Exit 4 at I-985 and Highway 20, to give people a chance to carpool, to save the expense and time. Normally the cost is computed by total mileage of trip, divided by mpg of vehicle driven and then divided between riders. Some clubs use .32 per mile, but regardless it‘s cheaper to carpool than to drive yourself. PLEASE help your driver with gas expenses on the trip.
We will leave the park-n-ride at 8AM. Be there before 8. Will make a stop at Ingles in Cleveland. Should be at Ingles approx 9AM. If you are planning on meeting at Ingles, be there by 9AM.
Directions to trailhead from Cleveland - At the intersection of Hwy 129/11 and Hwy 75, take Hwy 129/11 north for approximately 3 miles. Turn right on Hwy 75A. Travel on 75A for approximately 5.9 miles to Hwy 348 (Richard Russell Scenic Hwy). Turn left on Hwy 348 and drive up the mountain for approximately 6.9 to 7.0 miles. The paved parking lot will be on the right.
This will be an out and back hike starting at Hogpen Gap. If you are driving directly to the trailhead, by there around 9:15 - 9:20. Should get the hike started 9:30 to 9:45.
My number if you need to call[masked]-4072.
