Let's celebrate this group's 6th year anniversary with a another hike and picnic - please sign up for each event separately. The suggested donation of $2 will cover both events.
Come join me on this moderately paced, ~5 mile loop hike up and around Butter Hill & Storm King Mountain, celebrate the group's 6th anniversary and work up an appetite for the picnic to follow - if you plan on joining for the picnic, please also sign up here: http://www.meetup.com/Hike-Putnam-and-Beyond/events/132453682
The initial accent up Butter Hill will be steep and rocky (with a little scrambling). We will enjoy views from the top before continuing on. The Bluebird and Stillman trails will take us on a loop down, around and up Storm King. Along this section there are some steep drop-offs, and possibly slippery sections. We will stop at various viewpoints along the way with wonderful views of the Hudson river and surrounding hills. This hike is only for intermediate/advanced hikers who can keep a moderate pace. You should be in good aerobic/physical shape.
Distance: ~ 5 miles
Terrain: Moderate with some steep hill climbs, slippery/rocky sections and drop-offs.
Dogs: No dogs please.
This is a members only event, (writing +1 in your RSVP comment does not mean you can bring along a guest).
What to bring: Bring plenty of water, snacks, first aid kit and wear hiking boots or hiking trail runners with a good grip. Insect repelant and sun screen/hat may also prove useful.
Meeting point: As there are several pull outs and this location can only be reached from the south, please pay close attention to the directions: Take Route 9W North for about 8.5 miles from the Bear Mountain bridge traffic circle, to the large parking area on the right. The parking is located where the road turns to the left, after the top of the hill, there should be a blue parking area sign. There is a small gravel lot prior to this parking area this is NOT our meeting point. NOTE: There is no access to this parking lot from the north (i.e. driving south on 9W). You will need to drive over the top of the hill on 9W (you will see your final destination a large parking lot on the left, just before you crest the hill) and continue driving south, turning around where you can. The best turn around point is probably Route 218. GPS location: N[masked], W74 00.067.
Cancellation notices:Please make sure to check your email/site prior to leaving for the event, cancellation notices will be sent prior to 7 am (but most likely the night before) if required.
