Morning Hike: Fahnestock Jordan and Beaver ponds

  • May 3, 2014 · 9:45 AM
  • Fahnestock Park Rt 301 at Charcoal Burners Trail

This morning hike will include 2 ponds, beautiful woodland trails and we will also climb the hill to a viewpoint overlooking Fahnestock.  Although the terrain on this one is not that difficult, I will be taking it at a pretty fast clip so please only sign up if you can hike quickly.  We will still stop and enjoy the views along the way.

Terrain: hiking trails with undulating terrain. Some small hills and a stream crossing. Easy/moderate.

Distance: ~ 4 miles

Pace: Moderate-Fast/Fast.

We will meet on Rt 301 at the trailhead (red trail marker) 2.7 miles west of the Taconic State Parkway, the google map is wrong use the directions below.

Friendly, well behaved dogs are welcome, but should be on a leash or strict control of the owner. Owners should find out and respect the rules of the park, and follow requests made by the organizers. Please make sure you bring water for your dog.

Prior to RSVP'ing please make sure you understand the group's guidelines for attendance and RSVP etiquette http://hiking.meetup.com/370/pages/RSVP_and_attendance

What to bring and wear: Bring plenty of water, snacks and possibly you will need insect repellent.  Wear hiking boots or trail runners, boots may prove to be better as we will likely have some wet sections and a stream crossing.

Meeting point: Take TSP to route 301 west, Go approximately 2.7 miles west. The starting location is hard to find as there is no parking lot just a widening of the road breakdown area. Just park off the road behind the white line, make sure you are behind the white line so you don't get a ticket. If you see another car parked in area you are most likely in the right area as cars only park at the trailhead in this section of road. There are trail markers on both sides of the road but they are hard to spot. We will be taking the northern trail. If you are coming from Cold Spring. Go about 5.9 miles from the intersection of 9D and 301.There are mileage markers on Rt 301 the last one before the trail head is at 5.8 miles. The markers look like the attached photo https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/2/8/6/event_2177030.jpeg The mileage is on the bottom line. The attached sign is East bound at 5.8 miles from Cold Spring. Park on the side of the road. You will notice a worn area on the side of the road where cars park. Park you car off the road. There are trail markers located on the both sides of the road but you can't see them easilyfrom a moving car they are hard enough to see when standing in front of one.

Cancellation notices: Please make sure to check your email/site prior to leaving for the hike, cancellation notices will be sent prior to 8 am if required.
