This is an all day event in Minnewaska State Park. We will hike a mixture of hiking trails and old carriage to Lake Awosting. Beautiful views along the way, a possible waterfall and a cooling swim in Lake Awosting. Planned route will likely include Mossy Glen , Blueberry run and Rainbow falls trails, Castle point, and carriage roads (including the one around the lake).
As the Hamilton trail and part of the Castle Rock trail are closed this year, we will be taking a substatially different route than in previous years, including several trails I have never hiked. Bring your sense of adventure and be prepared for the unknown, distances/terrain are estimates. We will be meeting at the lower parking lot at Minnewaska State park.
You should be moderately fit, and be able to hike these distances whilst maintaining a good pace. This is not for beginners.
Terrain: Moderate. A mix of hiking and carriage trails, including some rock slabs
Distance: ~ 13-15+ miles
Total elevation: ~[masked]ft
Dogs - Please contact me if you wish to bring your dog, dogs need to have hiked with the group before.
Swimming at Lake Awosting: At the lake we will take a break from hiking and swim in the clear water to cool off. Bring your swimming gear – there is a room to change in.
How to sign up for this hike:
This event is for members only who have hiked with me before. Given the length and pace we will be going on this hike, I am also limiting to members who I believe can handle what is planned. This is in the interest of safety and overall enjoyment of the group.
If you wish to attend please sign up on the waiting list, you will then get an email indicating whether your RSVP has been changed to Yes/No. Space on the hike is also limited, so it is also possible that you remain on the waiting list for this reason.
After hike potluck (optional)
Let's have a wonderful potluck picnic as a group after the hike, bring a dish to share and we will have a feast. Food will not need to be carried on the hike, it can remain in coolers in the car until we return. We will either picnic down at Awosting falls or drive up to the upper lot and picnic there.
What to bring Bring water (2 liters minimum), insect repellent, suntan lotion, lunch/something to snack on and a first aid kit. As we will be stopping to swim at the lake also bring your swimming gear and a towel. I recommend wearing hiking boots or sturdy hiking sneakers. Summer can bring intermittent showers so it is also a good idea to have a rain jacket with you as a precaution
Meeting point We will meet in the Lower parking lot at Minnewaska State park, when entering the park after paying the entrance fee, turn right immediately,, and follow the short road to the parking lot. Do not proceed up the hill. Paxton our meetup greeter bear should be on the trunk of the car.
Upon exiting the New York State Thruway in New Paltz (Exit 18) go WEST on Route 299 through New Paltz. Stay on 299 for approximately 6 miles. At junction with Route 44/55 make a right. Park entrance is about 6 miles up winding mountain road on left. After paying the park fee continue up to the top of the hill. The park charges $8 (free for those with Empire pass). I would suggest carpooling with others to save money. One carpool suggestion is at the exit ramp of the Thruway or opposite the Brauhaus restaurant at the intersection of route 44/55 and 299.
Cancellation Notices: We will be monitoring the weather prior to the hike and if conditions are not suitable the hike is subject to cancellation. Please make sure to check your email or the meetup site prior to leaving your house, cancellation notices will be sent prior to 7 am if required (but most probably the night before).
