Beginners and Sociables Evening hike: Oscawana park and island

  • Oscawana park and island

Let's explore Oscawana park with its ruins from the McAndrews estate: http://www.mcandrewsestate.org/ Trails have only recently been added over the last couple of years in the area, and it still remains a hidden gem of history.  If time and the weather allow we will finish off our evening with a loop on Oscawana island with a sunset/dusk exploration overlooking the Hudson river.  Sunset is at 7.35 pm.  We will likely walk back to the cars during dusk so I would recommend bringing a flashlight/headlamp

Hike Details

Distance: ~3 miles

Terrain: Generally flat with some small hills.   We may explore a little off trail at times to see the ruins in the estate.

Pace: Relaxed/Moderate

Dogs: Friendly, well behaved dogs are welcome, but should be on a leash or full control of their owner. Owners should find out and respect the rules of the park, and follow requests made by the organizers. Please make sure you bring water for your dog.

What to bring and wear

Wear hiking boots or sneakers, and bring a flashlight.

Directions

Take Route 9 to the Montrose/ Bucannan exit. Furnace Dock Road is just south of the exit on Route 9A. Take Furnace Dock Road 1.1 miles to the parking area.  Parking is somewhat limited so park close together and double park with others in the group.  if necessary I believe parking along the road is also ok.

Cancellation notices: I will be monitoring the weather prior to the hike and if conditions are not good the hike is subject to cancellation. Regardless of the weather, please check your email/site prior to leaving for the hike, cancellation notices will be sent prior to 5 pm if required.

Nice hike! It certainly is an interesting area up there and who knew it even existed before Wednesday night?

Enjoyable loop, always discover new mysteries in this park. Shame the evenings are getting so short!

I was at A&P for carpooling at 6:30pm and didn't see anyone so I went to park at the park but did not find it because the GPS wouldn't take Crugers and sent me in circles with Furnace Dock Rd. I went left where I should have right. Ran around the park with another meetup hiker 7:15 could not find any sign of you and gave up. Ok next time.

Cheryl, Sorry you missed us. I don't think anyone said they were going to meet at A&P (at least I saw no one saying yes to my suggestion - as indicated I couldn't meet there as I would not have time with the commute and signing in folks for the hike), hopefully you will be able to join us next time and I am glad you and Roxanne found each other and could do a little exploration of your own.

Sorry. Hit traffic and then got lost on my way to the parking lot. Got here at 7 and tried to see if I could find you all but no luck :(

I got there at exactly 6:59, so unless I hit the wrong parking lot, you all were gone. Fairly certain I was in the right spot, plus I found Cheryl. I do think we walked the wrong direction (toward lake instead of what I later realized should have been across the street). Oh well...bummed, but I may try this on my own with my kids.

Roxanne, Sorry that you missed the group, we left between 6.50 and 6.50 and headed away from the river - sounds like you walked in the other direction - across the railway towards the river. Hope to see you next week.

    Thanks Heike, nice quick hike.
Did we went to the island? I think I miss that part!

Island was the opposite side of the road than where we hiked (over the railway towards the river), unfortunately we didn't have enough time to explore there this evening.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
