Short Christmas Day Hike - Candlewood Hill

This seems to now be an annual tradition for us - the last 4 years have been a blast so let's do this again! Drum up an appetite and enjoy this short but aerobic hike up Candlewood Hill in Fahnestock State Park. The hike is only 3-3.5 miles long (approx 2.5 hours), but includes a pretty steep climb to the top of the hill, and a couple of short rocky sections. You will be rewarded for your effort with wonderful views. The hike will include both woods roads and hiking trails. Note this hike can be extended a little if the group is interested.

Distance: 3-3.5 miles

Pace: Moderate

Terrain: Moderate: Woods roads/hiking trails with some short rocky sections and some hills. Remember hiking in winter conditions makes hikes more challenging.

Friendly, well behaved dogs are welcome, but should be on a leash or strict control of the owner. Owners should find out and respect the rules of the park, and follow requests made by the organizers

Prior to RSVP'ing please make sure you understand the group's guidelines for Attendance and RSVP etiquette http://hiking.meetup.com/370/pages/RSVP_and_attendance  Due to parking limitations this event is for members only, writing +1 in the comments does not signify you have signed up and can bring a guest, please plan accordingly.

What to bring and wear: Bring water, something to snack on, and anything else you need to enjoy the hike. As with all winter hikes you should wear hiking boots. The trails may be icy in spots so we would suggest having traction devices (Stabilicers/microspikes) and/or hiking poles with you as a precaution. Remember to dress in layers and bring enough clothes for the conditions. Please no cotton or jeans, these can be especially dangerous to wear in the winter or certainly uncomfortable if they get wet or damp. For more information on preparing yourself for a winter hike see clothing_for_winter_hiking

Meeting point: We will be starting our hike from the barrier (a couple of hundred yards north of N Shore Road) at the southern end of Sunken Mine Road. Sunken Mine road is a dirt road and closed at this time of year, so you should plan to approach it from the southern end. Parking is limited, so carpool if possible, make sure you don't block access to residences and pull off the road as far as possible.

Cancellation notices I will be monitoring the weather prior to the hike and if conditions worsen the hike is subject to cancellation. Please make sure to check your email/site prior to leaving for the hike, cancellation notices will be sent prior to 8:30 am if required.

Liability Waiver: This is a social group of like minded individuals that enjoy hiking, it is not organized by a professional hiker. Hiking or outdoor activities have inherent risks. Your participation in our hikes or other events could be dangerous and can result in serious injury, medical emergency, even death. By signing up for this event, you agree to participate completely at your own risk and to take full responsibility for your own safety and well being, including those of your guests.

Always a wonderful way to spend Christmas morning, hiking with friends and being surrounded with beautiful nature. The small layer of snow just added to the fun.

All's well that ends well. Many thanks to Heike for organizing this ritual Christmas hike, to the folks who shared their cookies and assorted sweets, and to Steven for patiently guiding me out of the woods. Happy Holidays, everyone!

This is one of my favorite traditions of the year. What could be better than starting a holiday off with a really good workout that you are sharing with friends in beautiful surroundings? Thank you, Heike for hosting this hike and making it a tradition. It simply wouldn't be a great Christmas without you, the group and this hike!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
