Blue Sky Reserve

  • Jul 18, 2013 · 5:30 PM
  • Blue Sky Ecological Reserve

The hike: The out-and-back hike starts along an old unpaved road (The Green Valley Truck Trail) through a riparian habitat. After a mile the trail turns uphill and climbs for a bit less than two miles to the top of the Ramona Dam.  Distance to the dam and back is 5 miles with 800 foot elevation change. Walking time is about two hours.

Needed: Good hiking shoes, sun protection and water are highly recommended (it might be warm). Depending on actual starting time and our pace, we may or may not make it all the way to the dam since we need to be back by sunset to retrieve cars before the parking lot is locked.

About Blue Sky: Blue Sky Ecological Reserve is a 700-acre oak-lined canyon flanked by coastal sage scrub and chaparral-covered hills. The Reserve is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Brilliant colors of wild flowers on the hillsides in spring, the songs of birds, and the tree-lined creek provide an inviting escape for a nature walk. The trails are open to the public free of charge during daylight hours.

Please be on time as we will be leaving on time.

DIRECTIONS FROM I-15 TAKE RANCHO BERNARDO ROAD EXIT, HEAD EAST ON RANCHO BERNARDO ROAD/ESPOLA ROAD FOR APPROXIMATELY THREE MILES. BLUE SKY RESERVE IS ON ESPOLA ROAD, APPROXIMATELY 1/4 MILE SOUTH OF THE OLD COACH ROAD/BRIDLEWOOD ROAD TRAFFIC LIGHT INTERSECTION.

Started out flat then it's all uphill mostly. Beautiful view of Ramona Lake once you get to the top. After that, it's all downhill from there (on our way back). A lady in the group told me to stay in the middle of the road (path) because of the poison ivy plants on both sides of the road. Good thing she mentioned it as I didn't know!

As it says in the announcement "Distance to the dam and back is 5 miles with 800 foot elevation change. Walking time is about two hours." Not sure what else to say - if you are in poor shape, it is impossibly hard, if you are in great shape it is easy, for most of us, somewhere in between.
