This group will meet on a bi-weekly basis to hike various trails in the Medford Fells. This bit of woods surrounding a group of reservoirs is officially titled "Middlesex Fells Reservation," and maps can be downloaded in pdf format from www.fellsbiker.com.
The Fells actually cross through Winchester, Medford, Melrose and Malden. Our hikes will start in the Medford section because it has the easiest and most available parking. There are always plenty of open parking spots at the Flynn skating rink at 300 Elm St., Medford.
We will be meeting on week days in the late afternoon. There is a playground-like area at the corner of the Flynn Rink parking lot by the street. This is where we will congregate while we wait for people to arrive. The hikes will average 2-3 miles in length and will usually take a little over an hour. This is forest with rocks to climb over. It is a very easy hike compared to the White Mountains, but hopefully we will keep to a pace that will give us some exercise without leaving anyone behind. It may be too difficult a hike for young children, but anyone 9 or older is welcome to come along. On days when it is raining, we will postpone it to the following day or the following week (depending on the next day's forecast). We will plan to have a regular schedule once things get rolling so that people can decide to join the hike on a last-minute basis to accommodate the variability of work schedules.
