Hike and Potluck

  • Jun 20, 2014 · 5:30 PM

Let's hike the Potrero Ridge and Open Space, ending in a potluck dinner at my house just off the trail. This is the longest day of the year, so we'll have plenty of light for our hike and potluck - sunset is at 8:10 p.m.

The hike will be a shuttle, parking at our end-point, and then sharing rides to our starting point, at the western end of the Potrero trail system, near Potrero Road and Via Acosta. We will work our way eastward to the endpoint, just under 5 miles, and around 800' climb and descent.

Directions to my house (our starting and ending point) will be provided to those who register for the hike.

You'll have an opportunity to drop of your pot-luck item at the start of the trip; refrigeration and storage are available.  Please indicate what you'll bring in comments; I'll provide hamburgers and some frozen key-lime pie, plus dishes and cutlery.

Steve's Genuine Florida Frozen Key Lime Pie
6 limes ("store-bought" or from your backyard tree)
1 can "Eagle Brand" sweetened condensed milk
1 3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs
    5 tbsp butter
    1/4 cup sugar
Zest the rinds of two of the limes. Avoid brown spots.
Make a graham cracker crust by mixing the crumbs, butter, sugar, and half of the lime zest. Press into a pie pan, and freeze.
Juice all six limes (retain the pulp but not seeds or rind). Mix with the Eagle Brand and remaining zest until thick, about three minutes. Pour into the chilled crust, and return to the freezer.
Serve with paper-thin slices of lime, frozen raspberries, and/or whip cream as desired.

2nd part of post as it did not allow beyond 1000 characters

    Yogurt rice
    Home made yogurt
    Boil whole milk
Leave it to cool to just as warm as human body or slightly warmer
Add one spoon of plain yogurt that you get in market.
Leave it overnight. Keeping inside some insulated container helps the yogurt bacteria grow well.
As you seed milk everyday with previous day's yogurt the taste gets better! It becomes less and less like factory made stuff and more and more like authentic stuff (no cream, no extra stuff)

    Cook white rice

Mix the homemade yogurt with cooked rice and add little salt if you like. Yogurt rice goes well with pickles or sauces.

    Enjoy!

    Broccoli curry:
    approx measures -
    1/2 lb finely chopped broccolis
    salt to taste
    red chilli powder
    turmeric powder
    oil ( i used sunflower oil )

    Preparation
Cook the ingredients with little water slowly for about 20 min. Water is only to avoid charring. If you have a good quality thick pan or a slow cooker you can avoid water. It tastes better when no water is used for cooking. Cook with lid closed. Keep turning the ingredients every 5 min.
