Description: This will be the first developed section of McDowell Creek Greenway. The greenway will link several existing and new single and multi-family residential neighborhoods to great destinations including Birkdale Village and the proposed Robbins Park in Cornelius. The County is partnering with the Town of Cornelius on this project.
This mile and a half run of greenway in Cornelius and Huntersville extends from Westmoreland Road to Sam Furr Road. It offers a green oasis for town dwellers and excellent access to Robbins Park and Westmoreland Athletic Complex as well as significant retail, office and residential areas. This route is also part of the Carolina Thread Trail and the Lake Norman Bike Route.
- Terrain: Our walk will mainly be on paved asphalt surface, but include a short trek through the nature preserve connecting the greenway to Robbins Park and through Westmoreland Athletic Complex.
- Pets are permissible, though they must be leashed at all times. There are several locations which have garbage cans, as well as doggie bags for picking up after your pet.
- There is no public restroom facility on the greenway.
- Each hiker is responsible for their own snacks and water if needed.
We'll meet at the Birkdale Village Shopping Center, in the right side parking lot of the Regal Birkdale Stadium 16 movie theater, next to Dick's Sporting Goods. We'll start our adventure walk at 6:15 PM. We can stop for frozen yogurt in the shopping center after the walk if the group is interested.
