San Gorgonio Nine Peaks from Momyer to Vivian Creek Day Hike

Elevation gain: around 9,000'
Distance: high 20's

We will meet at the Vivian Creek trailhead at 4am, shuttle down to the Momyer trailhead, and get on the trail by 4:30am.
We will hike up the un maintained trail towards SB Peak East, then go cross-country towards SB Peak, hitting that summit first. We will then summit SB Peak East and all the others along the Divide, summiting San Gorgonio last. We will then go down the Vivian Creek trail, possibly taking a cross-country route to High Creek, where we can refill on water.
This will be a very tough hike with lots of gain and mileage, off-trail sections and the need to carry water and food for a long day. Sign-ups are limited; email me if you want to share the pain on this awesome hike.

Group size is limited to 4.

What a great hike everyone! This was probably my longest day hike ever according to the numbers, but didn't feel like it due to the great company. Thanks everyone for joining me on this great day in the mountains.

Me too had a wonderful time! Even though my legs not on friendly terms with me right now.

Rick, thanks again for kindly and bravely inviting me :) I really appreciate the opportunity. Tracy, I have to give to you for such diligent and precise record keeping. I don't recall seeing you jotting anything down. So it's all in your head? You have to be from outer space ;)

Dann, thanks for constant encouragement and patience with me. Even though your promise of an easy hike didn't pen out, I won't hold it against you this time....

Had a great time, Thanks Rick for researching and organizing the hike/route, Tracy thanks for the stats , looks so different on paper instead of feet on the ground. Sharon, such a strong hiker and quick with the humor. Thanks everyone. The weather was great, someone was smiling on us today.

Hi Muku! Glad to know you will be sharing the misery on the mountain!

I'd like to keep this option open: instead of heading down to Vivian Creek from San Gorgonio summit, we head over to Dobbs Peak (and make this a ten peak traverse!) and descend via Dobbs ridge. My GPS map along with the elevation profile is shown above. Of course we would only do this if everyone is up for it, we don't need to pick up water at High Creek, and we have plenty of daylight left.
Total gain is about 9K', and mileage is under 20.

Rick, I'll see you all at Vivian trailhead parking at 4am for leaving cars, I'm excited about this hike, 10 Peaks let's roll! :-)

Have you descended down Dobbs ridge before?

      June 28, 2013

    • Rick

Let's meet at the upper Vivian trailhead at 4am. I have gone up Dobbs ridge twice, last time a few weeks ago with Dan and Sharon, but have not descended it. Darn, we pulled off all those pieces of pink duct tape that someone stuck everywhere to mark the route... I think we can find our way though :)

I sent you an email message also. 3:40 am. At ranger station. Early enough for you ? :) read your email.

The temp forecast seems to be on the high side this weekend. So I will probably be even slower....
Which trailhead are we meeting Sat. morning? What are people's plan for arriving Fri night or Sat morning?

    June 26, 2013

    • danny

I was on the peak yesterday and there wasn't any breeze. Only caught a short lived breeze in a couple of spots going down Vivian. The heat estimates continue to rise daily. I'll check it again on Friday. As far as car camping at trailhead , I'm passing on that. I'll do my normal get up early routine. Sharon, if you want a ride from the ranger station, let me know.

      June 27, 2013

    • Rick

I'm going to pass on the trailhead camping also. Yep, it will be hot... I will bring a water filter in case we need to use one of the bail out points to get water.
