Enjoy Winter Wonderland at Harwood Lodge, January 10 – 12, 2014

O: Let’s go play in the snow! Want to have the kiddos enjoy nature and bake cookies in the mountains? Have kids play twister while you sit in front of the fireplace sipping coffee? And possibly play in the snow? Join us for a weekend of easy family hikes, nature, crafts and kids activities. Enjoy delicious food and a weekend full of relaxation, laughter and fun on Mt. Baldy. Friday night the lodge will be open after 6:30 pm. We will enjoy games and a roaring fire.

On Saturday, if there is snow, we will just play in the snow on the slope near the lodge. Bring your sleds and snowclothes. (If there is no snow on Saturday, we will be hiking 1-2 miles in the local mountains alongside a stream. Splashing in the stream and water play are part of the deal! The kids will help us bake cookies in the evening. On Sunday, we will be going to the San Antonio waterfall, and enjoy some more fun activities together.

Harwood Lodge was built in 1930 as a memorial to Aurelia S. Harwood, past president of the Sierra Club and Angeles Chapter leader. It is located in the San Gabriel Mountains, above Claremont, on Mt. Baldy (Mt. San Antonio). The elevation is 6300 feet. The lodge facilities include a picturesque, large, 3-story rustic stone building with a wonderful wooden dance floor, separate dining room, kitchen, two cozy fireplaces on the 2nd floor, gorgeous views, and relaxing porches. In the men's and women's and family dormitories you will have bunk beds with mattresses (please bring your own sheets, pillow and sleeping bag or comforter), hot showers, and flush toilets. Lots of space for the youngsters to run around. And yes, there is wi-fi, if you absolutely must be connected.

If you are ready to get the kids away from the city and enjoy the solitude of clear mountain air and blue skies, this is the trip for you. As we always do, all participants will need to help with the cooking and cleaning and the kids activities. It is going to be a fun, social, and amazing trip you will never forget! The cost of the trip is $ 45 for current Sierra Club members (12 years and older) and $59 for non-members.(12 years and older). Price for kids younger than 12 year old is $38 for members and $50 for nonmembers. The fee includes lodging, crafts, snacks, 2 breakfasts, and 1 simple dinner. Not a Sierra Club member? No worries. You can become one for only $15 at https://tioga.sierraclub.org/joinorgive/member1.htm There are two available private family rooms with bunk beds (in addition to the dormitories mentioned above) Families with very small kids will have priority to the family rooms. All kids need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. All participants need to sign a Sierra Club liability waiver, which must be submitted at check in at lodge. Contact outdoorsygal at sbcglobal.net for address to send payment. Bring snow chains for your vehicle.

I'm a new Sierra Club member & really need to get out of the urban env't, back into a more natural setting. This sounds great since I also love winter! I work until 4:30pm on Fridays, so wouldn't arrive at the lodge until about 6pm, depending on traffic, etc. Is this alright & would anyone want to carpool to/from? Thank you.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
