Mt.Wilson High Loop Hike

Start at the top! Enjoy the crisp autumn air in our local mountains, with a combination of forest and high country views. 10.4 miles, 2500’ gain at a moderate pace via Sturtevant Trail, over Newcomb Pass to the Rim Trail. Bring lunch, 10 essentials, and an Adventure or America the Beautiful pass for parking. Meet at the Long Beach Rideshare at 6:30am, the La Canada Rideshare at 7:30am, or Mt. Wilson at 8:15am (park along Mt. Wilson/Red Box Road if the parking lot is not open). K9s on leash with their well-behaved owners are welcome. Rain cancels.

Three meeting points! You can arrange carpools from the first two. Ridesharing policy.

6:30am, Long Beach Rideshare: North side of E Atherton St. (across from the CSULB Recycing Center) between N Britton Dr. and Fanwood Ave in Long Beach.

7:30am, La Canada Rideshare: Angeles Crest Hwy (Hwy 2), Just N of Foothill Fwy (I-210). Park on Angeles Crest Hwy only.

8:15 am, Mt. Wilson: From the 210 freeway, follow the Angeles Crest Highway (State Highway 2) north out of La Canada-Flintridge, past the Angeles Forest Highway turnoff to Palmdale, to the Mount Wilson turnoff at Red Box. This is about 14 miles from the 210 Freeway. Drive about 5 miles more to Mount Wilson. You will arrive at a small intersection near a number of transmitter towers. The gate opens at 10am, so we will most likely park along the road here.

Bring lunch, 2 liters/quarts of water, 10 essentials, water and snacks for K9s, and bags to pack out dog waste. Please don't bring a dog if you are not willing to clean up after it.

This is a Sierra Club hike and will be conducted according to Angeles Chapter Rules and Policies.

I am keeping a close eye on the weather. The Rim Trail would be extremely unsafe in the rain, so if the weather is bad I will have to cancel this event. I'll let everyone know by Friday morning.

Probably in the spring. I want to do it when the Observatory is open. It closes for winter at the end of this month, and I'm booked up until then.
