Cable Line to West Tiger 3

Join us for an evening hike up and back down the Cable Line trail on Tiger Mountain. This is the steepest route to West Tiger 3 and it's a great workout for those who like great workouts. Why go to the gym, when we've got a 2000-foot Stairmaster, with fresh air, right in our backyard?

This is a steep and strenuous route and we'll do it at a fast pace. If you like that sort of challenge and exertion (and endorphins!), and are in shape for it, you'll love this.


  • Distance: 4 miles RT
  • Elevation gain: 2000 feet
  • High point: 2522 feet
  • Difficulty level: Very strenuous
  • Hiking time: 2 hours
  • Hiking speed: Fast

Hiking condition for this hike: Hikers need to be in very good hiking condition to do this hike and stay with the group. To sign up for this hike, you should be doing hikes with over 1000 feet vertical gain per mile, or equivalent other high-intensity aerobic athletic activity, such as running or long-distance cycling.


  • 6:00 p.m. Park and meet in front of the gate at the end of the frontage road.
  • 6:15 p.m. Start hike.
  • ~7:15 p.m. Arrive at West Tiger 3 summit.
  • ~8:15 p.m. Arrive back at our cars.
  • ~8:30 p.m. Optional beer and bite at an Issaquah eatery TBD.

Directions to trailhead: From I-90 Eastbound, take Exit 20, turn right (southward) at the bottom of the ramp, turn right again onto the frontage road paralleling I-90. In about 0.4 miles the road goes through a gate. Park and meet outside the gate.

Trail and road conditions: The Cable Line trail is in terrible shape. We love it that way! Better workout :). The road from the gate to the parking lot currently has potholes that will swallow up you car. Aren't you and your car glad that we're not driving that road? :) The road we are driving to the gate is paved.

What to bring: Sturdy hiking boots, light or medium-weight non-cotton clothing for the uphill, warm mittens or gloves, light or medium-weight hat, also a warm hat, rain jacket, rain pants, warm, dry clothes, preferably fleece, for the downhill, 1+ liters of water, headlamp, day-pack large enough to hold all the above. Optional and recommended: hiking poles, waterproof pack-cover, camera.

Traction devices: Not required unless conditions change. If conditions change, this posting will be updated.

Dogs: Well-behaved trail dogs who like climbing steep trails fast are okay.

Kids: In-shape teens and beyond are welcome on this hike. After this, they may have a whole new admiration for dear old mom or dad. :) Cool.
