Hike Echo Mountain to Inspiration Point

We'll hike Lower Sam Merrill Trail to Echo Mountain, up Castle Canyon Trail to Inspiration Point. Relax, refresh, then hike down the Middle Sam Merrill trail back to the Lower Sam Merrill Trail and the cars.

Post hike will be a late afternoon picnic full of outrageously delightful foods, plus wine and cold beer. Email event organizer for more details about what to bring for après-hike dining.

Is this a beginner's hike? What type of trail is it? I am fairly new to hiking. Thanks

I would consider this a moderate hike. It's about 2.5 miles to Echo Mountain with a 1,400 foot elevation gain. Then another 2.5 miles to Inspiration Point with 1,300 foot elevation gain for a total of 5 miles and 2,700 elevation gain. I wouldn't consider it a "beginner's" hike but it really isn't difficult at all.

FYI... there's a high wind warning in effect for the mountains tomorrow. I think I'm going to pass on the hike this time. From the NWS:

WINDS... NORTH TO NORTHEAST 25 TO 40 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 65 MPH ARE EXPECTED... WITH ISOLATED GUSTS AROUND 80 MPH AT THE HIGHEST PEAKS.

    * TIMING... STRONG NORTH TO NORTHEAST WINDS WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE AREA THROUGH SATURDAY AFTERNOON. THE STRONGEST WINDS ARE LIKELY TONIGHT AND SATURDAY MORNING

Thanks Tony. Maybe see what the winds are doing when you wake up? If it's calm, then another weather service false alarm.

What a fantastic day, to meet a fantastic couple with such drive and zest for the outdoors. Thanks for the "history lesson" this trail was full of! and the cheese and wine afterwards, they hit the right spot. Thanks again
