Camping and Hiking in the San Gorgonio Wilderness Area - Memorial Day Weekend!

This Meetup is now closed to RSVPs. If you are interested in going, please email me through my profile or post a comment. If you would just like to hike with us and hang out afterwards at the camp, please post a comment. We would love to have you.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Got the camping bug?  In the mood for an overnight trip to the mountains? Are you free for Memorial Day Weekend?

I will book a campsite for a small group near the San Gorgonio Wilderness Area.  This overnight will be for 2 nights, arriving Saturday at 1pm, and leaving Monday by 12noon.

I will need a headcount on who might be interested to camp. Since it will be a holiday weekend, sites will go fast.  There will be a fee, to help cover the cost of the campsite, once I know the number of people willing to go and the cost of the campsite.  Just like at Mammoth, the cost will be based on the number of people attending.

The campground will close to many popular trails in the wilderness area.  Dogs are permitted, but they must be restrained while on the campground.  This mean, they must be on-leash, tied to a tree or in a crate.  They are not allowed to roam off-leash while at the camp.

You must bring poop bags to pick up after your pooch.

I know that there is a $5 charge for parking. I believe that this will be the duration of our stay, NOT per night. But I will confirm.

Parking is restricted, so if we can carpool, let try to do that!

If you don't know about, or have never been to the San Gorgonio Wilderness Area, you have been missing out!  These are world-class hiking trails. Most are single-track, so dogs on leash might be a good idea.

Here is more information:

San Gorgonio Mountain was originally known as "Old Grayback" by locals until officially designated by the US Geological Survey (from the Spanish heritage) on the original topographical map of the area produced in 1899. At 11,502 feet, it is the highest peak in California south of the Sierras. The San Gorgonio Wilderness derived its name from this peak within its boundaries. The Wilderness is located in the southeast portion of the San Bernardino Mountains on lands administered by the San Bernardino National Forest and the Bureau of Land Management.

Most of the Wilderness is above the 7,000 foot level. Two rivers (which would be called creeks anywhere but in Southern California), the Santa Ana and the White, flow out of the Wilderness. The numerous streams in the Wilderness Area do not always flow in late summer, and locating water can be difficult. Two small lakes, several meadows, and large, heavily forested areas provide a beautiful sub-alpine oasis in the dry lands that surround the mountain range. The isolated environment contains many threatened and endangered plant and animal species, as well as bear, deer, mountain lions and bighorn sheep. The summit of the 10,624-foot San Bernardino Peak provided the initial point in 1852 from which all of Southern California was surveyed.

There are 81 miles of trails in the National Forest portion of the Wilderness, and approximately 20 miles of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail in the BLM portion.

When you RSVP, let me know how many dogs you might bring.

If you would like to book your own campsite at the campground (once I know where I will book mine), let me know.  I will announce the campground shortly.

I hope you can make it!  Our camping trip to Mammoth was a BLAST! I think this one will be too!

Curious why the need for on lead while hiking a single track trail? My dogs have hiked a lot off lead on single track trails. They are even good around pack stock.

She slept a lot yesterday and was dry heaving but nothing came up. Went straight for her bed after our morning walk. I'm thinking she'll be better once it all comes out of her. Thanx for asking.

I can't go, Bev. I have been down with a back injury for the last week. Was hoping that I could make it for a hike, but it's not going to happen. I have Leanne's cutting board that I need to get back to her. How can I get it to you to take up there?

    May 18, 2014

    • Nancy

Bogart may be having surgery that week, so I might not be able to camp. If that happens, I'll just come up one day with George for a little hiking.

No, Fred has bad hips. All I would need is for him to step the wrong way on a rock and dislocate the one sort of intact hip that he has left.

      May 10, 2014

    • Nancy

Kathy, Bogart has a growth on his side that the doc wants to remove. As long as he can handle the surgery, we'll probably be doing it that week.

I'm coming up Friday! I am booking a little cabin in Sugarloaf for me and the pups. I can join you for a hike on both Saturday and Sunday! If Sunday's hike is long, I'll probably want to keep it on the shorter side on Saturday.

Friday is good for me too!

I think this is going to be a good group! I was debating whether I should send out a RULES email like I did with the other group, but I know all of you and know that you are all conscientious about your dogs. Last week I told Kathy L (and yesterday I mentioned to Kathy R) that I was thinking about booking our site for an extra night (Friday night) in case anyone wanted to set up camp on Friday afternoon and hike Saturday morning. Our permit for the San G Wilderness will actually be for Sunday, but there are other hikes we can do around the area in San B Natl Forest. I haven't done it yet, but will let you know if I am successful at remembering, then booking the extra night. Toodles! (I am sooo excited)!! p.s. we will also have to talk about food!

Hi Beverly! I wouldn't mind seeing the rules e-mail, just to make sure I'm following them. :-)

depending on what you are able to reserve, I may just try to do a walkup site at Heartbar and then join you for hiking.

Hi Leanne, there is lots of room. So don't worry about having to get you own spot. We are only restricted by the number of cars. We can have up to 8 max. Not sure if there is extra parking somewhere. Do you know?

      January 24, 2014
