Let's go on an Adventure and explore some new Gunpowder Trails

I stumbled upon some trails along the Big Gunpowder starting at Rt 40 E off Jones Rd showing on the State maps! We have never hiked them but I thought it might be a little adventure checking them out for the die hards or the just for fun hikers. There is one on each side and I thought we might divide up and do both sides so maybe we can have more trails to try in the future! They all tie into the other trails we already use up to I-95 Leaving the date open for now for wkds that I will be in the area vs hiking in PA now every other wkd ( like this wkd)!

It is always good to exerience new trails. I really liked the challenge of the "easy" side and then being able to go return on the fire road. Glad that two in the group opted to turn around after an hour as two hours is a good distance for me

I'm good. That email I got about the change in location was confusing. I guess from the posts, this was a mistake and/or not valid.

For those who are curious, the trail that runs along the river (blue blazes) is mostly clear, sandy, and has a few areas where some minor scrambling is necessary. There are a few fallen trees and a small stream to cross. The river is fairly wide and deep in this area, and that is probably the most interesting feature of this trail at this time of year.
Jax, if you're still taking a head count for lunch, I'm up for that!

I might not be the best person to ask! I usually do these local trails in regular old athletic shoes because I find hiking boots/shoes too cumbersome. It's not a muddy trail, if that helps.

What do u need clarified for directions?

    March 29, 2013

    • Ruth A.

Jess, if your GPS has a feature that allows you to input two intersecting roads, just put Jones Rd. and Route 40 (or Pulaski Highway). In any event, the parking lot is very easy to find. Once you make the turn onto Jones, the lot is on the left.

Hi Jax, how many hours you think the hike is going to be? Just asking because on a previous commitment after 3pm. Thanks!

    March 29, 2013

  • Jax

Ok so this is clear! We have never hiked this portion of the trails so we do not know the miles, how long or terrain conditions or if they have been well maintained ( I asked a cpl and they said not bad!)! It is being hiked to determine if we want to add to our selection or an extention for other trails these connect to, that we all ready hike! It's an adventure to explore "where no man (or woman) has gone before"! We have a few people coming from the Balto Singles as well as the Balto Metropolitan Social groups as well! So it can be alot of exploring fun or a real bust , who knows !! I promise not to be way out front but back with the pack! :>) Need an approx head count for lunch to see where we might go or open for more suggestions!

OK setting it for this Sat at 10 AM, pace will be unusual since we have not done it before! We wlill devide up that morning deciding what side who will do! As always we will only wait 15 min and will push off at 10:15 AM. Hoping for more of the hosts to join in so they can decide if they like these trails enough to use them more! Hoping to add a pic of the map! Directions from anywhere is Rt 40 east and Jones Rd just shy of the Balto Co Harford Co line. Make a right if heading east or a left if heading west on Rt 40 from Harford Co. on to Jones Rd ( next to Wertz Mulch) then a left into parking lot! I repeat this is an adventure to explore for a new set of trails be prepared for mud and the temperature along the river! Yes dogs are welcome if leashed according to park rules. If anyone is interested in lunch afterwards I will work on a place but let me know in advance! Anymore questons let me know! And Yes Susan I will HOST this one!! :>)

I've just recently discovered your group and have not been on any hikes yet but that's only a couple mes from my house. I know exactly where you're talking about but didn't realize there were trails there. I usually work on Saturdays but don't do much on Sundays. Email me when you decide to go. In case you don't see my address here this is it: [masked]
