So glad I did this hike, despite the heat and bugs! Thanks Greg for the frequent re-grouping and encouragement. So glad there was, as Greg said, "only one really steep part" - yeah right! Great fun with everyone, beautiful views and a great workout - perfect day!

We will stop at the overlook for about 20 minutes, so bring a sandwich or snack. Also, option to dine in Harper's Ferry after the hike with an outdoor deck overlooking the park.

I'm afraid I'm not going to make this hike. I'm having some sciatica issues and the "not for beginners" warning have me spooked. Looks like a beautiful hike, though. Have fun!

I'm leaving the Benfield Park & Ride (I-97 Exit-10 Benfield Blvd & Veterans Hwy) at 8 AM. There is still room for 2 more passengers.

  • Diana C.

I may have missed it in a previous email Paul, but what time are we meeting at the Park & Ride at Rt 70?

    May 21, 2013

  • Paul D.

    Hi Diane:

Yes there is still one space left... so you're in! That makes us full for the ride. We'll have me (Paul) you (Diane), Jiangmei and Diana C. Looking forward to the hike. See you all at the park and ride on 70. S/B a fantastic day!

Paul since I do not know the area real well. Can you provide directions from Federal Hill to there? Or do you have an address to input in the GPS?

WRT the comment "This is not for beginners" - I haven't been hiking very much, but am healthy, fit/strong, and sure-footed. Does this hike require special skills or extreme stamina?

    1 · May 15, 2013

    • Deb W

If you've hiked before, you're in shape, can walk a hilly six miles at a decent pace (2.5 miles/hr) and have the proper hiking equipment (shoes with toe protection, water bottle, bug spray : ) ) then you should be fine.

I'm excited. I've done the hike before, but it's been awhile. You'll like it!

      April 18, 2013

  • Paul D.

OK, Jiangmei is 2. One more spot left.

    April 17, 2013

    • Diane k

If you still have that one spot left I will bag driving and join you.

Directions to Harper's Ferry: 70 West to 340 South. Follow 340 from MD to Vir to W Vir. After crossing the Shenandoah River, take first Right at Shenandoah St and follow to the end of the road and make a left hand turn. The Amtrak parking lot is two block saway on the Right Hand Side.

    April 17, 2013

  • Greg

There is a $10 parking fee (per car) at the Amtrack Station in Harper's Ferry, so I would recommend car pooling. I will be at the RT 70 Park and Ride at 8:40 AM. The climb to the top of Maryland Heights is rather steep, so there will be several stops along the way.

    April 17, 2013

  • Diane k

I am willing to drive too. Live in Federal Hill new to the area so don't know my way around well but have a GPS.

      April 17, 2013

  • Diana C.

I would appreciate being included in the carpool from the Rt 70 park and ride!

    April 17, 2013

  • Paul D.

OK. I'll be there at the park and ride. I have room for 3 passengers and day packs

    April 17, 2013

  • Paul D.

I'm willing to arrange for carpooling from Harford/Baltimore County. If interested, let me know.

    April 16, 2013

Carpool from Rt 70 Park and Ride near Security Blvd. Suggest meeting at 8:40 AM. From Beltway, take Rt 70 East (Opposite Frederick) till it ends t the Park and Ride.
