I've been so busy moving this summer that I planned nothing for the 4th of July.  Now that I'm moved in it's time to start enjoying the scenery!

I set the location as the Jerusalem Mill parking lot but we will NOT be meeting there. I'll email attendees the address a few days before but it is about 1 mile from that parking lot.

We'll meet up early and drop your potluck goodies at my house. Then we'll hike the south white trail for about 7 miles. Then we will cook out and enjoy some grub while overlooking a quiet spot in the river.

Post what you're bringing please so we don't end up with 50 bags of Doritos. I'll provide a grill for any meat that needs to be cooked.

We'll cross the covered bridge, the Iron Bridge and do the Kingsville county park loop. This trail is my favorite trail so far in the Big/Little Gunpowder parks in the Kingsville area.

The South trail has some rocky and root areas you need to scramble over. I recommend hiking boots rather than sneakers to protect those ankles!

Total distance will be 7 miles. There is no bail off area so please be able to do the full distance. Please plan to be able to keep up at 2.5 to 3 miles per hour pace for 3+ hours without significant breaks.

We will step off at 2:30. If you are late, txt me. I will post my number and the address the night before the hike.

This is a rain or shine event.

Dogs are welcome but they must be well behaved! I don't care if you let them off leash but you must and I mean MUST be able to control them verbally or with an e-collar. If they trip someone up or act out I will ask you to put them on leash. There are places on the South trail where a dog could knock someone down a hill into rocks or the water. Also, if they mess on my property you'll need to take care of it.

Dogs will not be allowed in the house. There is a fenced area they can run around in though.

After the cook out we can head to Bel Air to watch the fireworks - I hear they put on a pretty good show.  And after the fireworks we can return to the house for a fire pit - assuming I can get it built in time!

This is cross posted with the 20s and 30s hiking around MD meetup group. No need to RSVP both places.

Oh, and I'd appreciate any cleanup help at the end. :)

Thanks again for coming Kathy and Tom. I had a blast and the serenade your son gave as we walked to the fireworks was a great touch. LOL.
Hope to see you at the next one in a few weeks.

Both the hike and the potluck dinner afterwards were great.

NOT coming on this event. Just don't want to be deleted from list

You are welcome to come to any of the events I post Joan. I only block folks when they have two no-shows to one of my events. Since you've never been to one of my meetups, I definitely have no reason to block you. :)

I just did this hike tonight from 7-10PM and I was drenched with sweat. So a shower or at least a quick rinse off would be advised, maybe even recommended for our more heavy perspiring fellow hikers. I can make a shower available for anybody that wants it. But please bring your own towels, wash cloths and toiletries.

Also, the trails is a muddy and sandy mess. I'm not one of those crazy home owners that makes you take your shoes off and put on pristine socks at the front door. But I also don't want your muddy, funky 10 YO Nikes tracking mud from the last 5 miles across my kitchen floor and vintage 1993 berber carpet. So please plan to bring clean shoes.

I replied regarding what I planned to bring but apparently the response didn't come through. I plan to bring a veggie tray with dip and drinks.

Thanks Tom. Looks like we've found yet another meetup.com bug.

I setup this event so Meetup.com would ask what food you are bringing when folks RSVP'd to this event. But I have received no emails. I'm guessing that feature in meetup.com doesn't work.

So please post what you are bringing to the group message board.

If you plan to only do the hike please post that too.

I am not supplying all the food for a cookout. I have the grill, deck, plates, flatware, some drinks but otherwise I never have enough grub at the house to feed a dozen hungry hikers. :) If I don't hear from you by the 3rd, I will assume you are not coming and I will update your RSVP to no. So please get back to me!

Wayne, I won't be able to join the group for the fireworks; I pick up my son in the evening on the 4th. Thanks.

That's fine Tom. It's a long day for all the events. And sure, Sara is welcome. There's a covered porch she can hang out in as well as a nice sized fenced in area outside. See you next week!

  • Tom B.

Yes, I'd like to come and I would like to bring my dog Sara. Would that work?

Hey Wayne, You mentioned that the trail has some rocky & root areas, but is it relatively flat (like the Pine Trail we hiked a couple of weeks ago)?

    June 24, 2013

    • Alex

The feedback is much appreciated Wayne. Sounds like a manageable trail. Will need to check w/family to ensure I have no other plans before committing to the hike, but hope to make it. Thanks!
