Trail Running the Big Gunpowder Falls Wildlands Loop & Dinner at Gunpowder Lodge

Who is up for a challenge?  :-)

Trying to up my game a bit and add some trail running to my hikes.  I have a tendency to injure myself when running so I'll be taking it pretty easy on the run part of this hike.  My plan is to run about 4.5mph for 1/8 to 1/4 mil at a time then a brisk hike pace about 3mph for a half mile.  Lather, rinse, repeat.  My fastest time hiking this loop is about 1 hour 20 minutes.  Hope to get down to 1 hour by fall.

This is an excellent trail for running.  There are few areas with rocks and roots that can twist an ankle.

Meet at the lower parking lot at Gunpowder lodge, closest to the river.

Wildlands is a ~4.5 mile loop that starts up hill through the forest then ends with a 1.5 mile flat hike along the river.

We will step off EXACTLY at 7:00. If you are late, txt me at 301-6five5-5327

This is a rain or shine event.

Bug spray and long hiking pants are highly recommended!

If you cannot attend please change your RSVP.  Two no-shows will result in me asking you to remove yourself from future events that have a wait list.

Dogs are welcome but they must be well behaved! I don't care if you let them off leash but you must be able to control them verbally or with an e-collar. If they trip someone up or act out I will ask you to put them on leash.

This is cross posted with the 20s and 30s hiking around Baltimore meetup group.

If the group wants we can go to Gunpowder Lodge for dinner afterward. They are used to hikers coming in and stinking up the place.  But I still recommend bringing a dry shirt to change into  :)

Sorry Bruce - something came up forcing me to have to start exactly at 6:30. I emailed you a few hours early and posted to the meetup saying we needed to step off at 6:30 rather than 7.

I'll be doing this run frequently. Hope to see you at a future one.

We both hiked and jogged on this outing; did about 35 minutes on hilly terrain. Good workout!

I was at the meeting spot from 6:35 to 6:50; didn't see anyone capable of hiking, so I went to the gym !!

35 minutes of alternating brisk hiking and jogging on flat, inclined and declining terrain. Good pace and a good beginning distance. Excellent start for this Wayne. Thanks

I plan to do this event once every other week. If there is demand I may post them weekly.

Tonight's weather looks overcast and under 80 degrees. Perfect for running I think. Be prepared to get muddy. :)

See you all there tomorrow at 6:30. I also would like to increase the pace and/or distance over time.

I hope you make this a regular event. Can't attend next week. Will be on a five-day backpacking trip. Need the motivation to make myself get out and trail run (something I'm not fond of doing). Trail running is helping me get more surefooted, something that comes in very handy when hiking.

Look forward to it. See you then.

By next spring I predict we'll be running this loop twice in 2.5 hours. There, I said it. The gauntlet has been thrown down. :)

Hi Wayne. I'm new to the Meet Up hiking group. I've been hiking locally for years (mostly Gunpowder in Hereford). Running part of the trail sounds like fun! I love a challenge (and it will be a challenge for me). Most likely can't stay for dinner though. Looking forward to Wednesday night.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
