Hike before the cornmaze at Catoctin National Park

We are just going make it a day.  1 hour drive to the Park from I-70 to the Visitor's Center at Catoctin National Park ( This is near Camp David and no cell phone signal just outside and within the park) There are a variety of trails. we will hike for about 2 1/2 hours  taking in Wolf Rock, Chimney Rock, and the Thurmont Vista and return to the Visitors Center by 4:30.  For those going to the Corn Maze I will have driving instructions from the Park to the Maze. There are fast food restaurants and some locally known places to eat in Thurmont or you may want to bring your dinner with you. Bring money to pay the driver if you are going to carpool.

This Trail is considered moderate to slightly difficult with some steep climbs and the loop planned is approx. 3.8 miles per the parks site info..This is one beautiful hike with outstanding views from Wolf/chimney Rocks.. This is the 3rd year in a row:becoming a yearly event..

Just signed up to come....didn't say it was stopped. If I make it on time, great. If I don't, don't wait for me. Of course, I guess there is nothing to say, you will even see this before the hike.

I will have space in the car for three people. I'll be arriving at the 70 park n ride around 12:40 since that seems early enough to get to the park by 2. Anybody needs a ride let me know. Always up for carpooling.

I am not planning on going to the cornmaze; I have a fur baby at home who will be ready to relieve herself by the time early evening rolls around. If anyone else plans on doing ONLY the hike, I am willing to drive from the park and ride. I have room for 3 people in my vehicle...Kevin - Which park and ride is everyone meeting at? Not too familiar with any of them off of I-70...thanks!

Lisa, yes there is still room. I am planning on arriving at the park and ride around 12:30ish. Just you, me and Prarthana for today! Looking forward to meeting everyone :-)

FYI, temps should be hovering around 60 during our hike, with 10-12 mph winds and the possibility of light sprinkles. In other words, very tolerable, but don't plan on it being 70 like yesterday--bring a few layers!

Would anyone like to carpool from the Columbia area (Park & Ride at Rt 32 & Lil Patuxent?) or from I-70 in Howard County (Park & Ride at I-70 & Rt 32)? I'm also staying for the corn maze and campfire.

    October 31, 2013

    • Allen

Sounds good. 12:40 pm at the Park & Ride at Rt 32 and Broken Land Pkwy. There are two lots--let's make it the West lot (the one closer to entrance ramp to Rt 32 West), as close to the handicap parking spaces as we can get. See you tomorrow!

P.S., If anyone wants to carpool with us, we have room for at least 2 more and are staying for the corn maze and campfire. Just don't be late! :-)

Where are you looking to carpool from? I don't have a ride and was looking for one.

Look 2 posts down from this one. I think this is where people would normally meet, if you're coming from Baltimore.

I will be somewhere all morning, and am not sure I can make it to the I70 Park & Ride by 12:45 pm. But if I can I will and am willing to carpool with whomever shows up.

This hike is uphill to start..I guess you get the climb up the mountain out of the way then it flattens out for the most part..There are no rock formations you have to jump...those are at scenic viewing areas and at will or if inclined...

    October 29, 2013

  • Kevin

Carpooling can be done by those interested in doing so..This year I am not carpooling....cya there...

I'm interested in joining fin or this hike, but haven't done a hike in a few years. I am still physically active however. How "slightly" difficult is this trek? I'm not a big fan of leaping across large spaces between rock formations, but can handle the minor jumps.
