Winter Solstice Celebration

Winter Solstice Celebration, Saturday, December 21, 6:00 to 10:30

The winter solstice marks the time of the year when the darkness begins to fade and the earth prepares for a new cycle of growth. Come and celebrate this important event in the calendar with the Friends of Druid Hill Park.

Join us in the garden adjacent to the Rawlings Conservatory for a roaring fire, tales, legends, and a hike all focused on the solstice. In support of our celebration, the Rawlings Conservatory & Botanical Gardens will be open from 6:00 to 9:00 ( you will not want to miss checking out the Holiday Poinsettia Show at night - it's amazing!!) Oh and we'll have some seasonal refreshments too! $5.00 Suggested Donation

Solstice Event/Fire: 6:00 - 10:30 - Winter Solstice Bonfire Resolution: On the darkest night of the year, gather one or two holly leaves and tear them into many pieces. Place these holly leaf crumbles in a sheet of paper onto which you have written, in red, one single word – what quality or trait you would like to be born within yourself along with the newborn light. Twist the paper closed and throw it in the Solstice Bonfire. As it burns, and your heart is pure, see your wish fulfilled.

Rawlings Conservatory Poinsettia Show: 6:00 - 9:00 - Hundreds of exquisite and unusual poinsettia specimens, of every color, size, and shape – produced in the greenhouses at Cylburn Arboretum – are on display. They are set in the backdrop of Victorian scenes, including an ornate parlor. Come revisit Baltimore’s past and celebrate the holidays at the Conservatory!Winter Rose, Tapestry, Ice Punch, Shimmer Surprise, Strawberries & Cream, and Fireworks are just a few of the spectacular varieties of poinsettias that are on display, complete with a grand decorated tree and a Victorian-style train.

Solstice Hike: 8:00 - 10:00 - This hike is roughly a 5 mile loop on paved surfaces with several hills. Please come dressed for the weather and bring a water bottle. Hikes begin and end at the Solstice Celebration at the Rawlings Conservatory.

We have some stuff to take care of so probably won't be there right at 6pm, but it sounds like it's mostly going to be people from this group there?

Just want to make sure we find you guys and get to go on the hike with the group.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
