Hike & Sip Sugarloaf

Let's hike scenic Sugarloaf mountain and sip some wine at the nearby Sugarloaf vineyard.

For those of you who have not been to Sugarloaf it is a fantastic and scenic workout.

Elevation: 1,282 ft.
Vertical: 800 ft.

Geologically, Sugarloaf is known as a monadnock, a mountain that remains after the erosion of the surrounding land. Here, that process took approximately 14 million years. The rugged cliffs on the summit are composed primarily of quartzite, the predominant type of rock on the mountain.

We will meet at 9:45 and step off promptly at 10. We will hike the 7 mile yellow Saddleback Horse Trail.

A trail map can be found here:

From Washington Go North on Route I-270 to the Hyattstown exit, circle under I-270 and continue on Route 109 to Comus, then right on Comus Road to the Sugarloaf Mountain entrance. From Bethesda/ Rockville Area Take Route 28 West of Rockville to Dickerson, then after passing under the railroad bridge, turn right on Mt. Ephraim Road and go 2.5 miles to Sugarloaf Mountain entrance.

My contact phone is[masked] if you have any questions.

Again, please be on time as I will start this hike at 10.

Bring water, snacks, comfortable hiking shoes and clothes and a camera for the great vistas.

Can't wait to see you all there!

    Hello everyone :)
I am new to hiking and was wondering if I can get some feedback from you experts.
I will go shopping for some nice hiking shoes this weekend, what other items should I look for? what kind of items do you bring when you go hiking? Any suggestions and/or comments are much appreciated :)

Just hiked here this past Sunday! Excellent place to hike - great trails clearly marked with some good elevation. And then head down to the winery for some wine and cheese! Cant attend this one but please have again sometime soon!

All: we will meet at the Potomac overlook parking lot and take the white trail down to the yellow. If anyone wants to hike to the summit it is close to this lot. See you Sunday :)

Hey all, I'm new to the group, but I'd love to come! I live in Mount Vernon, and I don't have a car, so I was wondering if anyone will be coming from that area who would be willing to carpool? I'd be glad to pitch in some gas money.

Sounds fun! I've never hiked Sugarloaf before. Anyone want to carpool from the downtown Baltimore area?

    January 9, 2013

    • Shannon F.

Ok just to confirm you three will be carpooling? I don't want to leave anyone out. If u need to we can caravan from the park n ride. Please let me know. Thanks peeps! :)

Yeah, Tim, Carolyn and I can all carpool together. I live in fells point, Tim, so that should work out well. We will just pick you up from your house, Carolyn, instead of going to the park n ride.
