I've been doing the Mummers Day Hike on new years day for a gazillion years. We start in Chestnut Hill and walk through the park to the Mummers Parade on Broad St in center city. Once in town, we stop at Whole Foods in Fairmount for a bite, before heading down to Broad Street to watch the string bands. Eventually we take the Chestnut Hill West or East back to the starting point. This is a 4-4.5 hour hike covering 12 miles.
The walk is great: through the Wissahickon on small and/or large trails based on the weather and footing. We hit Kelly Drive, then walk either low along the drive, or up on the Schuylkill ridges towards the Art Museum.
If you have never seen the Mummers in person, then this will be a real treat. The other great parade starts around 5pm in South Philly on 2 Street. Some of us may hang around for this or go home and come back.
Caution: You should be able to walk 4-5 hours without much of a break.
You should have recently hiked 10 miles in conditions detailed above. Some hills.
