Walking into the John Heinz Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum from modest neighborhood is like passing through a space portal to a distant land. The 8-10 miles of mostly flat pathways border a dozen bodies of water surrounded by foliage where we spot waterbirds like great blue herons, ibis, egrets, cormorants, etc. Eagles, owls, swallows, kingfishers, and dozens of other birds are often seen along with wildlife like fox, ground hogs, deer, etc. We always find a surprise like an eagle darting overhead or a water moccasin slithering through the water. These viewings always make my day.
We hike Tinicum once each season because the foliage and the wildlife change. Winter at Tinicum can be spectacular if the lakes freeze.
We'll hike for 3-4 hours covering around 9-10 miles. Afterwards we'll head over to the Dock Street Brewing Company for great pizza and beer. Sasha, one of their brewmasters, whom I met a "Beer School" at Whole Foods Plymouth Meeting said he would take us on a tour of the brewery.
Caution: You should be able to walk 3-4 hours without much of a break.
You should have recently hiked 8 miles in conditions detailed above.
