The walk each season at John Heinz Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is always filled with surprises. Owls, eagles, fox, deer, ground hogs, great blue herons, Ibis, cormorants, kingfishers, sparrows, turtles, water moccasins are often bopping around. When you enter the preserve which is within the city limits next to a middle class neighborhood, you are transformed to beautiful wildlife preserve with little evidence of a large urban area. Most of the walk is right on the edge of various lakes or lagoons.
We'll hike for 3.5-4 hours covering around 9 miles. Mostly flat. Initially we'll stop a bit to look for wildlife, but will pick up the pace a bit. However, I'm always looking for a eagle zipping close overhead.
Afterwards we'll head over to the Dock Street Brewery for great food, pizza, and beer.
Caution: You should be able to walk 3-4 hours without much of a break.
You should have recently hiked 8 miles in conditions detailed above.
