  • This location is shown only to members

If you plan to attend, add yourself to the waiting list and try to meet with me one time at a local hike, we will chat some more before moving you to the Yes list.

This is a long day road trip for wildflowers photos taking, hiking, a little bit rocks scrambling at "the desert park full of Rocks and famous Joshua Trees", Barker Dam and some other trails to other Rocks, Cholla Castus Garden. We'll try to get some small hikes and few photos as those I got from those who have been there previously

Difficulty: the event is rating Level 2 (Moderate) for driving long distance, desert climate and exploratory. The hike difficulty is Slow-Moderate/Moderate Pace (6-7 miles, 4-6 hours hiking time, rocks scrambling and elevation gain) Click RATING TABLE for more info

What to bring: plenty of water, food, snacks for lunch and a long day sun screen and most important 10 Hiking Essentials http://www.meetup.com...

ABOUT THE JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK: http://www.nps.gov/jo...
A Desert Park: Viewed from the road, this desert park only hints at its vitality. Closer examination reveals a fascinating variety of plants and animals that make their home in this land shaped by strong winds, unpredictable torrents of rain, and climatic extremes. Dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features add to the attraction of this place. Come see for yourself

Meeting Locations:

Arrange your carpool in Orange Park and Ride or meet at West Entrance Visitor Center South of Hwy 62 (Twentynine Palms Highway) on Park Boulevard in the Village of Joshua Tree.  Driving direction below

Hikes:
1. Wonderland of Rocks (closed April 8-30; our plan B: Ryan Mtn, Mastodon Peak, and more): it's a tough trail with rocks scrambling. We can do a shuttle hike and spend at least 5 hours for this 5.5 miles one way from Boy Scout trailhead to Indian Cove or we should start hiking from Indian Cove picnic trailhead for almost 3 hours to Rasttlesnake Canyon and Willow Hole and return the same way. Having lunch at Indian Cove Picnic area.

2. More Rocks and Cholla Castus Garden: drive back out to the 62 Hwy  and further East to the North Entrance. We'll stop by small hikes for some great photos: Arches Rock, then stopping by Cholla Castus Garden, turn back to Jumbo Rocks, Skull Rock and Cap Rock. Optional Ryan Mtn for those who are interested if time allows.

3. Barker Dam and Wall Street Mill: an easy hike to Wall Street Mill out and back, then a nature tour walk to man made lake at Barker Dam to end our day at sunset...

Directions: http://www.nps.gov/jo...
Joshua Tree National Park lies 140 miles east of Los Angeles, 175 miles northeast of San Diego, and 215 miles southwest of Las Vegas. You can approach it from Interstate 10 and Hwy 62 (Twentynine Palms Highway)

***Park & Ride in Orange on N Tustin St and E Lincoln Ave Orange, CA 92865***
Traveling NORTH on the 55, exit Lincoln Ave. West. Make 2 lefts, go under the freeway and take a left onto Tustin Ave. heading South. If you're traveling SOUTH on the 55, exit Lincoln and make a left on Tustin. The Park & Ride will be on your left hand side. You'll need to make a U-Turn to get to this side of the street

It was a tough heat even though it was cooler than Grand Canyon last year (still haven't got those photos from last year upload yet, I'll show you how was the heat, > 125 F). Thanks all the drivers for drive far and got us all back safe and sound. Thanks to all for a great picnic and food...until our next trip and many more photos I haven't looked and uploaded yet...Happy Friday!

    April 25, 2013

  • Lily

Last call, any question please speak up or send it my way, the RSVP will be closed tomorrow. I may not check email or reply to you pass noon Friday. See you all Sunday in Joshua Tree then!

    April 25, 2013

  • Lily

Since it's getting warmer, we still keep the same meeting time as planned: 8:30AM West Entrance Visitor Center.

Let's bring lunch and something to share as we'll have a picnic to hide a way from noon heat, then rest a bit have fun at the rocks for photos before resume hiking again in the afternoon.

The final note to those who are on the waiting list, please let us know what is your plan to meet with us by this Thursday; otherwise, we don't consider that you are serious joining this event.

    April 21, 2013

    • Lily

Weather forecast seems to be warmer in the afternoon and in the 90s on Sunday. There is no shade out there Joshua Tree, so we only have about 3 hours hiking in the high 70s in the morning, then lunch. After that we'll have fun at the rocks and scenic trails for photos. For those who are on the waiting list, we love to have all of you to join us. However, your chance of going is up to you as either you have never met with us on any hikes or you have a habit to flake out or drop out last minutes on multiple events in the past. If you are new, please identify two persons on the yes list and let them know to contact me for your going. For this events as this trip, I like our group to be reliable, no flake out factor unless it's really a last minutes emergency. Thanks for your consideration.

    April 21, 2013

    • Pauline N

Hi Joseph. I am also carpooling and not the driver. Should there a change on availability, I' ll let u know at the earliest. Take care.

      April 22, 2013

  • Joseph c

........will pay for gas/help driving if needed

    April 21, 2013

  • Lily

I don't know if I should thank Miss Pauline or not, jk. We may not have Wonderland of Rocks in our schedule as of now, Joshua Tree NP forced to close some areas in the park and including our planned area India Cove/Rasttlesnake Canyon (Wonderland of Rocks) due to VADALISM http://www.nps.gov/jotr/parknews/rattlesnake_canyon_closed.htm
    It's so sad, isn't it?

We are hoping the park finished the investigation and will re-open by the time we go; otherwise, our plan B will be other areas in the park (it's a huge place for many hikes). My second time to postpone Wonderland of Rocks, why? yikes!

We are still waiting for the weather and update the meeting time 2-3 days before the event. Let's pray for good news, shall we? Until then, see you soon on the trails!

Don't forget your pillow and blanky so you can rest comfortably. As for the actual time we still have to wait for Lily to post exact start time. I'll update when I know for sure.

      1 · April 14, 2013

    • Lily

8:30 AM is the ideal time (it may be too warm out there, the desert, if we hike too late); however, we will update when it's closer to the day for the weather and the park conditions. Thanks Pauline for the notes (including the pj + bunny), I'll read and update the group!

      1 · April 15, 2013

    April 11, 2013

    • Lily

I'll update more when it's closer to the day, tax time and so busy with work...

      April 12, 2013

  • Penny F.

Sorry, I'm no longer available for an all day hike this day. Have fun!

    April 12, 2013

  • Lily

Hello the waiting list folks, of course I love to have as many hikers to hike as possible, the more the merrier to share my happiness. However, I like hikers to be more considerate and respectful when RSVP unless it'll be a last minutes emergency thing that one has to cancel. Another friendly reminder that I don't close the RSVP list because it is so many, but it's a chance for me to meet with you before this event. If you are on the waiting list, there are 2 options for you:

    1. Please find a chance to meet with me either this weekend, next weekend or on Tues/Thurs weekdays. You will find at least 1 out of 5/6 events on the calendar with me on. 2. If you don't want to see me on a local event, how do you recognize me from 100+ miles away from OC. However, a benefit of doubt in case you are too busy, indicate 2 hikers from the RSVP yes list that you know, vice versa and you will keep in touch with them for questions, directions in case you can't find us. Fair enough?

    April 11, 2013

    • Lily

We had complaints in the past that couldn't find the group, all kind of issues when you don't know anyone, so speak for now to hold peace forever...haha :-) I like you to be happy with the group instead of getting lost, lonely and frustrated, then after that sending me "lovely" emails of your frustrations...see you all soon on the trails!

      April 11, 2013

    • Lily

BTW, I forget that we have organizers: Jerry, Dave Sp and several regular hikers, so if you hike with them before and can contact them in case of questions, then let us know as for safety purpose, we don't like to see a hiker sign up to hike with us, but he or she never appears anywhere and no one knows what happen. Thanks!
