Newport to Laguna (Level 2, Medium Pace)

<<< Not suitable for your first hike >>>

Rating: Level 2, Medium Pace, Intermediate or Advanced Beginner (previously must have done Dreaded Hill, BFI, Mathis Canyon or other steep big hill) Click here for hike rating table

Pace: Medium

Length: 7.5 miles, 1100' altitude change, one big hill

Duration: 2 to 2.5 hours depending on speed

Directions: From Newport Coast Road take Ridge Park road uphill until it ends at intersection with Coastal Peak road. Trailhead is at the end of Ridge Park road. Park along the road and meet at trailhead. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early if you need to use nearby bathrooms at Sports Park or have not been to this area before.

Description: This hike starts out in Crystal Cove state park and takes us to to Laguna Coast Wilderness park where we will hike the beautiful wooded Laurel Canyon and Willow Canyon. This is a 'lolipop' hike - we hike Bommer Ridge trail to Laguna Coast Wilderness and do a loop of Laurel Canyon trail and Willow Canyon trail and then take Bommer Ridge trail back to where we started at Crystal Cove.

At the half-way point we will stop at the Laguna Coast ranger station for a short break (water and porta-potty available).

There is one big steep hill to be climbed along Willow Canyon on our way back. Its downhill all the way to Laguna and uphill all the way back.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
