Night Hike in Modjeska Canyon, ... Just a perfect Friday evening with friends!

We’ll hike for 1 hours up and 1 hour back down Harding Canyon. Bring Wine, Cheese, Crackers or any other snack you like.

We will stop at the picnic table, have snacks and return.

Bring a good flashlight.

Important Note
Remember there are no bathrooms at tucker . If you need a bathroom use the one at the Park . It is right past the Fire Station on the left. It is also a place where you can park, if tucker parking is full.

DEPARTURE TIME: 6:00 PM. As with all Hiking Club events, this hike will start at the designated time. Please arrive 10 minutes early to allow for parking and introductions.

ABILITY LEVEL: Easy to Intermediate; We hike at a slow pace taking in the views as we go. This can be a difficult hike due to elevation gain.

ABOUT THIS HIKE: A steady ascent up the canyon starting just behind the Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary on Modjeska Canyon Road. We’ll hike the wide and scenic Harding Creek that meanders through the beautiful and regenerated Harding Canyon. This is not a technical trail.

The views on a clear day go for miles with superb vistas and neighboring ridge lines. Catalina Island, Newport Coast and Palos Verdes Pennisula are just a few of the coastal views. Modjeska and Santiago Peaks are due east of the trail.

The canyons and hills are now green; the creek beds are full of water and much of the area shows signs of vegetation re-grow after the 2007 Santiago fire. The trail runs straight along a ridge through scrub oak, manzanita, coastal sage and sycamore trees. This trail has full sun exposure during the heat of the day. You must have 2.5 liters of water.

The trail is well maintained and climbs steadily the entire way up. We’ll turn around about the 2 mile mark.

NOTES: Wear trail shoes for the steep rocky inclines. Pack some snacks you can nibble on along the way. I recommend plenty of water and/or sports drinks.

DIRECTIONS: From Interstate 5, take the El Toro Road exit in Lake Forest. Head North/Northeast up El Toro Road towards the mountains. At Cook's Corner, take the left fork. The road turns into Santiago Canyon Road. Three miles past Cook's, turn right on Modjeska Canyon Road. Remain on Modjeska Canyon Road and don't accidentally turn on Modjeska Grade Road. Pass the fire station on the left and continue 2/3 more blocks until you will see parking on the right for the Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary. Park here if space permits or park in the small gravel lot just beyond the Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary parking. This is a neighborhood and parking can be limited. I suggest carpooling. The trail head is on the left of the road.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

1) Select hikes/events at your ability level or below.
2) Bring extra water/electrolytes and hydrate before and during the hike.
3) Bring extra high-energy snacks and a lunch.
4) Bring more than one bottle of WATER (in case it leaks).
5) Bring charged cell phone, personal first aid kit, whistle and flash light.
6) Wear shoes with traction - Trails can be steep and/or rocky.
7) Wear and bring hat, sunscreen and appropriate attire/gear based on terrain and weather conditions.
8) NO HIKER LEFT BEHIND BUDDY SYSTEM - Select another hiker as a buddy and to check-in with each other and report any problems to Hike Organizer or Sweep. Do not leave a fellow hiker alone or unaccompanied on the trail.
