Morning Hike Boat Canyon/Laguna Coast Wilderness (Levels 1+ to 2 Slow-Moderate)

  • Aug 24, 2014 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

THIS IS A SPECIAL HIKE FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T ATTEND AFTERNOON HIKES THAT USUALLY OFFER HERE. There are some steep hills for a good workout, but we will move slow pace up hills and wait at junctions. We will hope for overcast during hiking time since there is no shade on this trail, but the ocean views from the cliff at the end of Boat Canyon are like Hawaii, absolutely stunning!--- Boat Canyon above Laguna Beach

DEPARTURE TIME : 8:55 - 9:00 AM

DURATION/DISTANCE/ELEVATION: Plan on about 2+ hours for 2 - 6 miles RT, with about[masked] ft vertical gain and about that much loss

General Rating/Difficulty: Levels 1+ to 2: moderate or strenuous for elevation, distance and pace. CLICK RATING TABLE to read more about skill levels

ROUTE : We will meet at Gate 14 of Laguna Coast Wilderness. Since this is a residential area, we'll limit number of participants, only RSVP if you are sure to be there. Boat Canyon is a ridge above Laguna Beach, after a mile uphill, we'll stop the lookout, then continue on Boat Canyon Rd to Boomer Ridge Rd. Depending on the group pace and the weather, we'll come back the same way, back down Boat Canyon Rd to the trailhead.

ESSENTIALS : wear good traction hiking shoes, bring water snacks. There is no shade on this hike, but it has a great view of the coastline when it's clear. There is no restroom available on this trail.

DIRECTIONS : We meet at Gate 14 LAGUNA COAST WILDERNESS TRAIL MAP
Yahoo Map or Google to Dunnegan Dr and Dartmoor St, Laguna Beach. Please map your direction before hand and don't rely on your GPS alone as the trailhead is a bit tricky to find. Dartmoor St and Hillcrest Dr signs are under the tree branches, so it's tough for first time driving here. From Pacific Coast Hwy going south (pass Newport Beach, Corona Del Mar, Crystal Cove before reach to Laguna Beach), turn left on San Joaquin St (Viejo is the next light street), right on HILLCREST DR, Turn Left on DARTMOOR ST drive to the end.
From PCH going North pass Laguna Beach turn right on San Joaquin St (right after you pass Viejo, the street with light), right on HILLCREST DR, Turn Left on DARTMOOR ST drive to the end

Although we had an unexpected adventure I can honestly say I gained a lot from the experience. I also meant a great group of people who I hope to see again.

Lily it was great to walk up with you and I agree with your philosophy on hiking. We took a wrong turn on this hike and didn't mean to be late returning. Very sorry.

Glad you got my point Holly, let's try again to have a memorable Boat Canyon as beautiful as photos yesterday. It's been a long time to get that nice sky reflection to the ocean. We don't do in the middle of the day for a complete route (earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon) when it is cooler to finish faster and less tired. Too bad, I missed you all in those photos. If I knew, the Lookout should visit first and you all would enjoy it your way. It is very beneficial with your crossed training, I could sense your great voice for your record in hiking, on a positive way of saying "Congrats", see you on the trails soon !

Julian, I doubt to have you joining in GC trip not because your hiking ability. In the past, I had those enthusiasts who were just like you today to leave the group if they kept having that attitude when helping me. The way you did not helping, but using my group and putting my new member at risks of lack preparation, knowledge and experience on a strenuous hike. If you wanted your workout, you could do it in couple hours why had to use the group? I thought you came to discuss GC since you weren't sure the plan and trusted you to ask a favor. FYI, LUCK won't come twice, and keep in mind "Better Safe Than Sorry"! Here is a link for CPR/First Aid http://files.meetup.c...

Glad it was only 5 of you, imagine if we had 50 in the group today, it was chaos if they all did what they wanted.

OMG so now I know what level 3+ is…. What an awesome experience. Julian, Jill, Holly, Lila you guys are amazing and lots of fun. You too Lily, sorry we left the plan but we were having so much fun we just could not stop. For the record, I have never pushed myself that hard but the human body is an amazing machine! I would love to join you guys on more 2+ hikes but I'll leave that level 3+ to you pros! Mucho respect. John

I bet you taste your own medicine. However, I have 2 words: inconsiderate and disrespectful! If I knew you came to the group to show your "EGO", I would just cancel the hike and left you to do what you wished. When you changed your plan, did you know that I was still waiting for that 2 hours meeting back with you? I have met hikers who were active, workout often at gym, but they still got heat issue, chest pain, knee issue, sprained ankle, etc, if they first came out to a hike and tried to "race" the regular hikers who have been hiking with the group for months, years. You know that we don't require much from you except reading the RATING TABLE to know what to expect. People can hike all day and finish 20+ miles in the park, but how long it will take them, that is why we need to rate a hike. Just like eating, the food is no longer good if you over eating.

PS: For the record my Fitbit recorded the following data from our hike.
    - Distance 8.33 miles
    - "stairs" 189
    - Cal burn (for me 4128)
    - Steps 18,430
    - Time - 3 hours, 53 minutes

      Awesome John.. good for you.

FYI, our group has this hike very often. It's once a week for truly level 3+ same distance less than 2 hours (Richard is hosting)); level 2+ often combining with levels 3/3+ once a month around full moon weekend (I host) and sometimes there will be another organizer hosting. We often finish less than 3 hours for level 3 and less than 2 hours for level 2+. I don't know how to define your hike today. It was a speed of level 2+.
