As the Allies raced to defeat Hitler, four men of the same unit earned medal after medal for battlefield heroism. Maurice “Footsie” Britt, a former professional football player, became the first American to receive every award for valor in a single war. Michael Daly was a West Point dropout who risked his neck to keep his men alive. Keith Ware would one day become the first and only draftee in history to attain the rank of general before serving in Vietnam. In WWII, Ware owed his life to the finest soldier he ever commanded, a baby-faced Texan named Audie Murphy. In the campaign to liberate Europe, each would gain the ultimate accolade, the Medal of Honor.Alex Kershaw is a journalist and a New York Times bestselling author of books on World War II. Born in York, England, he is a graduate of Oxford University and has lived in the United States since 1994. His forthcoming book is "Patton's Prayer: A True Story of Courage, Faith, and Victory in World War II" (2024).

Diana Ross and The Supremes - Motown Music History Livestream!
It's Friday night, let's travel back in time to hear the fabulous Motown music of Diana Ross & The Supremes. Our program will include a brief introductory overview of The Supremes: Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard and listening to/watching their most noteworthy songs and performances.
During the program we invite you to discuss the music with your fellow attendees via Zoom. The Supremes were an American female singing group and a premier act of Motown Records during the 1960s. Founded as The Primettes in Detroit, Michigan, in 1959, the Supremes were the most commercially successful of Motown's acts and the most successful American vocal group, with 12 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Most of these hits were written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland–Dozier–Holland. At their peak in the mid-1960s, the Supremes rivaled the Beatles in worldwide popularity, and it is said that their breakthrough made it possible for future African American R&B and soul musicians to find mainstream success. Billboard ranked The Supremes as the 16th greatest Hot 100 artist of all time.
Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, the original group, were all from the Brewster-Douglass public housing project in Detroit. They formed the Primettes as the sister act to the Primes (with Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks, who went on to form the Temptations). Barbara Martin replaced McGlown in 1960, and the group signed with Motown the following year as The Supremes. Martin left the act in early 1962, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio.
During the mid-1960s, the Supremes achieved mainstream success with Ross as lead singer and Holland-Dozier-Holland as its songwriting and production team. In 1967, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & the Supremes, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. In 1970, Ross left to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Jean Terrell and the group reverted to being The Supremes again. During the mid-1970s, the lineup changed with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne and Susaye Greene joining until, after 18 years, the group disbanded in 1977.***

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION BEFORE SIGNING UP. A reservation fee of $25.00 applies for each attendee. You are welcome to bring two guests for the additional fee of $25.00 for each guest.
You're Invited! Many of you have requested a tour of Annapolis--and here it is! Celebrate March 23rd, Maryland Day, in Annapolis, Maryland. Maryland Day commemorates the formal founding of the colony of Maryland, when the newly-arrived colonists first had landfall on March 25, 1633/34.
There is no better place to celebrate it than in Annapolis: a city whose rich history includes being at the center of the nation's and state's history. In Annapolis, Maryland Day Weekend is now celebrated through a unique heritage based group of events that include $1 admission to sites that normally charge $12-$16 admission.
Your reservation fee includes pre-paid $1 tickets to several sites in Annapolis that normally require those larger admission fees. In addition, we will be visiting the Maryland State House where I will guide you through several centuries of history that have happened on this historic landmark. We will walk the cobbled streets and visit the City Docks.
An updated time itinerary will be updated before the event. However, the start time is firm.

- The Han Dynasty - EASIA 03Link visible for attendees
Richard Sassoon is starting an exciting new series on the historical developments of East Asia over the past two millenia. This session will follow the succession to the person of Qin Shi Huangdi, the first Chinese Emperor. This will result in the creation of China's first long-term and stable dynasty, the Han, and their incorporation of Confucian values into administration. This resulted in expansive economic growth, a flowering of art and scholarship, and numerous scientific advances. We will also discuss the wars with the Xiongnu (early Mongols), the transformative administration of Emperor Wu of Han, and the rebellion of the Xin Dynasty, and eventual weakening of the Han Dynasty after nearly 400 years of rule.
This presentation is part of a recurring East Asian History series that will take place every Thursday at 7:00-9:00 PM New York time. Previous episodes can be viewed on YouTube. The series is interactive, where you can ask questions throughout the lecture and discourse. This will make attending much more fun than just watching the recordings later. There will be a hard stop on new materials after two hours and an additional 30 minutes for discussions. Accordingly, we will move only as quickly as the material goes; I am more interested in communicating knowledge than adhering to a strict schedule.

Tonight's presenter will be our friend Richard Sassoon.
