Spirited Bodies at Holborn - Workshop

Spirited Bodies at Holborn!

Tonight, Holborn Life Drawing is delighted to welcome Spirited Bodies for the second of two life modelling workshops aimed at preparing aspiring models for a Spirited Bodies life drawing/ modelling event in September (date to be confirmed).

Spirited Bodies is all about giving people the opportunity to experience life modelling, bringing novice and experienced models together to model as a group under the direction of professional life models.

Spirited Bodies is for everyone - whatever your nationality, age, gender, background or physique, and whatever your motivation - overcoming eating disorders, celebrating the joy of losing weight, adapting to a post-teenage body, rehabilitating after illness, addressing ageist stereotypes, rediscovering one’s beauty post-divorce and making new friends to being a part in the process of creating art. Whoever you are, Spirited Bodies has something to offer.

Tonight's session is a workshop aimed at preparing inexperienced models for the main Spirited Bodies event in September. We look at different ways models may relate to each other in the space, as well as discussing posing techniques. You will learn the basics of life modelling, including staying still and knowing what is suitable for your body, as well as bringing out your best features; understand the difference between posing alone and in a group; when to be the ‘star’, and how to be part of an ensemble tableau.

Everyone draws when they are not posing ideally, unless you have come only to draw which is fine too. No drawing experience is necessary - the regular attendees at Holborn Life Drawing comprise both novice and experience artists alike and it's a very relaxed, friendly, supportive group. Basic art materials are on sale at cost on the night, or you're welcome to bring your own. We have both seated places and easels.

Usually models pose for 10 minutes each with another model or two depending on numbers, and sometimes models have a few turns. We collectively try very short poses from 1 minute to ten; if you would like to try a longer pose that may also be possible.

You're welcome to try modelling either nude or clothed.

Entrance just £10 for artists and models

Artists please sign up in the usual way. There are usually some spaces for those wishing to drop in on the night, but this is not guaranteed and you're advised to RSVP if you can.

Models must sign up in advance so we can get the gender balance right. In particular, men wishing to model must please first message the organisers via Meetup, rather than just sign up on this site. We will write back to you to let you know if you have a place or not.

Meetups will prioritise those who have not been before or waited a while, but also operate on a first come first served basis.

All those wishing to participate as a model should complete the following questionnaire and submit it the organisers:

Contact details:

1. Have you done any life or other nude modelling before?
2. Why do you want to participate in Spirited Bodies?
3. Do you have experience as a performer or artist?
4. Do you have experience in martial arts or sport/fitness?
5. Do you have experience in meditation?
6. What is the longest length of time you think you can hold still for?
7. Do you mind touching another model whilst posing e.g. holding hands?
8. Do you mind or want to be photographed whilst posing, and if so to what degree i.e. identifiable or not?
9. How old are you?
10. How would you describe yourself physically? How physically active are you and with what type of activity?
11. How did you hear about Spirited Bodies?
12. Whereabouts do you live?

The event is a great idea, and well organised. We models were guided gently from short to long poses. Practically, posing was easier than I had feared, but emotionally it was a stranger, richer, and more beautiful experience to be on "the other side of the easel". Many thanks to Esther and everyone involved.
