Dec. Meetup - "Making Your Wordpress Site Look Great With CSS"

At the December Hollywood WordPress meetup we will be hosting a night devoted to helping you make your WordPress website or blog look awesome.

The night will be divided into two parts..

Part One: "CSS Basics For Controlling The Visual Elements of Your WordPress Site" - Hosted by Dave Winter

This will be the lecture portion of the night where Dave and myself will be sharing some of the basic things you can do to spruce up the look of your your website or blog. Our featured speaker, Dave Winter is an instructor of website design at Cal State Long beach as well as owns his own website design studio. You can check out his work at his studio site here:

Part Two: "Break Out Session"

There will be some members of the group that are already using CSS to customize their own sites there to answer your questions in this second half of the night, so whether you are just getting started in using CSS to change things in the design of your page or you want to use CSS to animate elements on your website there will be someone there to help answer your questions.

... So remember to bring your laptops with your CSS questions and we'll see you on Dec. 10th.

Cheers, Greg

Liked the breakout session. Much better than sitting around and taking notes for 3 part was that I wasn't well prepared for a hands on experience. So I had trouble asking the questions I needed to ask. Thanks for organizing. Great space and expertise.

Yes this was a great Meetup. I love the location. And I am thankful for such a welcoming group -- especially for a newbie like me. I want to give a particular shout out to Natalie MacLees. She was so helpful, patience and knowledgeable. We are really lucky to have such great members like her and Greg in our community. Keep rocking!

For those who asked about the Wordpress for Beginner's, here's the link:

We're a really small group & presently working in a Q & A format, similar to tonight's meeting. Everyone gets their questions answered, in a one-to-one setting! (I'm going to clone myself!)

If you're just getting started with Wordpress, we'd love to see you in January!

Fantastic Night! So much great information! Thanks, Dave for your tireless work with everyone! Thanks for fixing my plugin formatting with CSS! It's PERFECT! Thanks Greg for this great topic! Judging from the focused attendees, I know we all got so much out of it. Looking forward to January's meeting!

So looking forward to this. This will be my first Hollywood WP Meetup having been active in the SoCal and Pasadena groups as well. I am such a CSS3 fan.

I look forward to meeting you. We'll have to geek-out over CSS3 afterward. My presentation tonight will focus on using easy tools to make some simple customizations to your theme. We'll have a break-out session for the second half to take a closer look at more involved CSS. Come ready to create!

Is there a fee to attend?

    November 25, 2013

    • Greg D.

No fee to attend but depending on where you park you may need to pay for parking. There are several large lots on Hollywood Blvd. near where we hold our meetup. The one I like the best is the CVS lot which is about a block away from WeWork.

Thanks for the info! Looking forward to attending.

Can't wait to join in on the Hollywood WordPress meetup fun! I'll be bringing some of my current web design students to help during the breakout group session. Greg and I will be focusing on simple CSS customizations for your basic WordPress theme, but feel free to throw me a suggestion on any CSS you might be interested in learning. You never know - we might just focus for a bit on that.

I've got 3 students on board to tag along -- but don't worry -- you probably have more experience with WordPress than they do (so, this one will be intimidation-free!). Looking forward to it!

Hmmm, you might have to play around with image width... or it might be something a bit trickier, like adding a new thumbnail size through WordPress. I'd love to take a closer look at it with you on the 10th, when we can really look at it. Until then, keep giving it a shot.

Thanks, Dave...I just learned something NEW: I didn't know you could define different thumbnail sizes! That *sounds* like it might be where I need to start. Great info! :-))) Woo Hoo!

Learning the basics of CSS is a great way to start really creating your own version of an existing theme.. or maybe making a custom theme. Awesome.

    • Greg D.

You got that right... Sometimes making a few tweaks in your CSS can do a lot to make an otherwise stock looking theme, take on an original look of it's own. Thanks Roy

Another excellent topic, Greg! Excited to hear what you & Dave have to say about CSS. I've finally started getting the hang of it, but can always use more help!

Thanks Karen, It promises to be a good time. Dave is a fun and entertaining guy and is very knowledgable about how to use CSS to do some cool things to create a custom site design.... and I'm no slouch either. :)

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
