I'm new to Fallbrook and could not have landed in a better place to finally jump into all things homesteading:

  • vegetable, herb, and fruit gardening
  • homegrown cooking: exploring to what extent my backyard can stock my kitchen, which things are practical to grow and make from scratch and what's not worth it, and how much I can fit into our 1/3 acre plot.
  • keeping chickens
  • homemade cleaning supplies, bath stuff (soap, shampoo, deodorant, lotion, lip balm, and more), and 'health and comfort' stuff (like herbal chest balms for congestion), preferably with homegrown ingredients.  Some things for now (honey, olive oil, avocado oil) aren't going to be in my backyard anytime soon, in which case as much as possible I'd like them to come from Fallbrook, followed by Temecula, Oceanside and other surrounding cities.
  • Beekeeping, vermiculture, rabbits, clotheslines, knitting, sewing, growing and spinning fiber, felting, water conservation (graywater, rain barrels, landscaping), permaculture, seed-saving, and solar energy are more topics of interest.  Also, I was in apartments for the last 10 years, so things like how to compost indoors, apartment-sized livestock (like quail), container gardening, etc., are on the table as well.

My reasons for going DIY are many:

  • In these times, never was the saying "A penny saved is a penny earned" more profoundly true.  I make things to save money.
  • I make things because I'm tired of agonizing over labels: "Does this have any ingredients ending in '-paraben'? What is 'guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride'?"  If you make it, you know exactly what's in it.  And for the same cost or less, you have a product made with only the best ingredients -things like beeswax and flaxseed oil.
  • I make things because it's often the case that homemade is not just cheaper but BETTER.  Not to mention healthier.  Notice how so many cleaning products tell you to only use them in a well-ventilated area?  And how that's not a concern with things like vinegar and baking soda?
  • I make things because it makes me happy.  It's a way to unplug, to do something concrete and meaningful, to slow down, to use my hands, to CREATE, to provide for my family in a way that I had missed once I was no longer working.
  • I make things because it makes more sense than the wastefulness of our present system.  I really like that I can refill an empty deodorant or lip balm container, use an empty milk carton as a soap mold, put thoroughly worn out clothes in a rag bag for future braided rugs or dollhouse linens, make very effective hair detangler out of a handful of herbs and some hot water, and repurpose past-its-prime olive oil as fuel for an improvised oil lamp.  I like that the chickens eat our scraps and then repay us with high quality fertilizer for the vegetable beds.  I like that the cost of buying a bicycle has already been offset by the money we've since saved on gas.
