A ravishingly beautiful costume drama based on the true story of a mixed-race girl raised as an aristocrat in 18th century England. Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mabatha-Raw) is the illegitimate daughter of Captain Sir John Lindsay (Matthew Goode) and a Caribbean slave. Following the death of her mother in 1769, Dido is sent to live with her great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson). She's raised as an aristocrat alongside her cousin Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon). But despite her inherited wealth, the colour of her skin means she remains an outsider and is not even permitted to dine with the family. Her life changes when she falls for reforming vicar's son John Davinier (Sam Reid). Inspired by a true story, Amma Asante's sumptuous romantic period drama has a Jane Austen-esque eye for social hierarchies while also tackling the weightier subject of slavery. The outstanding supporting cast includes Miranda Richardson and Penelope Wilton.
