Let's go to the beach!

Ok guys - After quite a bit of feedback and more investigation, it looks like we are gonna go back to Galveston State Park this time.  (See the comments section if you`re curious about this decision.)

Admission Fee:  $5.00 per adult – children under 12 are free.  Be sure you stop at the office and pay if the booth is closed.  They can ticket your vehicle if your paid fee receipt isn’t attached to your windshield.

After you enter the park and pay your entrance fees,  park in the lot located to the left of the park entrance.   Cross the dunes and let's meet down on the beach.

We can walk down to the Jamaica beach area or stay within the area of the state park - basically wherever we have enough run to let the dogs play. The forecast is for low 80's on the island.  Don't forget to bring some water for your pup and a long line if you don't want to let them off leash.  (Keep the county wide leash rule in mind if you do decide to let your dog off leash.)

As discussed in the comments section, Galveston has an ordinance against dogs on restaurant patios, but I did find out about some available options for eating after we have fun at the beach.  Several of them are listed in the comments section. If you know of any others, please let us know.

flat tire plus 25 minutes to repair it equals running late. Text me when you get there and I'll give you an ETA.

I checked some online calendars for Galveston and found that there are 2 big events this weekend at East Beach and after looking on the Google satellite images of Jamaica beach, there doesn’t appear to be a whole lot of parking anywhere. Since I haven’t been to Crystal Beach in years, and I couldn’t find a central meeting/parking area for us to meet there either……….it seemed the State Park would be the safest bet without going all the way to San Luis pass. There is an admission fee at the park, but there is also a parking fee on Crystal Beach. The only problem with Jamaica Beach was the parking which would be free, but there didn’t seem to be a big enough place for all of our group to park.

I would definitely like to go to Crystal Beach sometime, it would be really convenient for everyone to meet because we could drive onto the beach – I’ll try to take some time to do some reconnaissance before we schedule the next official Beach trip.

I think east beach is great also Stewart beach. They are both cleaner than public beaches

I think something is going on May 17th http://www.galveston.... so probably not a good idea this weekend. Smooth Tony's on the East End has a patio/backyard so they might be pet-friendly.

Many people walk their dogs on the strand. Fudrucker's is ok with pets and possibly brick house

Crystal Beach allows dogs. We let ours off his leash when most people start leaving. He loves camping there

Christina - I haven't been to Crystal beach in YEARS.... so you know if any of the Crystal Beach establishments allow dogs?

Guys - y'all also need to realize that letting one dog play off leash isn't the same as letting several off leash.

When the location is decided, will it be posted so we'll all know?

I sent all attendees an email - please check it out and then comment on this page.

I've heard that Jamaica beach is perfect for dogs

I suggest East Beach, because there is free parking and more places to go afterwards.

We will most likely do this again at least twice more this year, so if you can't make it this time, watch for the next one!

wish yall would have somthing for the dogs close to humble, are north of houston sometime?

    March 25, 2014

George - send me some ideas and I'll be happy to set something up! Need to know about good trails, or good dog parks and dog friendly places to eat. I'm not familiar with that part of town so I need some ideas/suggestions.

I did check with Galveston State Park and they indicated that dogs are allowed to swim - their only requirement is that they always be on leash. So look for a long line - for those of you don't already have one! Folks with big strong dogs could get a lunge line for a horse. Stronger snaps and thicker webbing (and probably less expensive).

I would be interested in maybe joining for the day. Last year the restaurants stopped letting dogs on the patio. Galveston passed an ordinance that banned the dogs. I'm not sure if that is still in effect.

It was before December. I think last spring. If I remember I will call The Spot to see if they allow dogs. They used to have water dishes for the dogs and was the place that told me dogs were no longer allowed in the restaurants in the city.

Jason-I'm waiting for confirmation from the Galveston county health department, but it looks like you're right. It seems the ordinance isn't new, but enforcement of it is. If this turns out to be correct, does anyone have any other ideas or more dog friendly area beach towns they could suggest?

I'd love to go during the day, sometime in May before the memorial weekend.

According to the website - It is Prohibited to permit a pet in the water of a designated swimming area or to permit a pet animal (except a trained assistance animal accompanying a person with a disability) within the land or beach area adjacent to the water of a designated swimming area; or

I think it sounds great - but I think dogs are not allowed in the water. According to the Texas State Parks website - " Pets and glass containers are not allowed in swimming areas". We would need clarification on this before going.
