Conquer the Park: Huntsville State Park

(Rev 5/14 - added directions)

Continue to get in shape for the summer and join us for a 17-mile plus hike at Huntsville Sate Park. We will meet and start our hike at the Amphitheater/Nature Center parking lot at 10 am. This will be a somewhat fast hike (2½+ mph). If you don’t have time, come for the first part of the hike. Bring food, water and insect repellant. There is a $5 entrance fee.

Directions to the Park entrance: The park is 6 miles southwest of Huntsville off of Interstate 45 on Park Road 40.  The Park phone number is (936) 295-5644.

We’ll meet at the Lodge parking lot. To get there, after you get your pass from the State Park Headquarters, drive past the Nature Center and bear right at the fork. Keep going straight until you get to the end where the parking lot is located. I’ll meet you at this parking lot. We’ll walk to the trail head together.

Can't stay more than three hours. At 17 miles, having to leave to get back to work doesn't sound so bad.

Fourth, I would also not drink a lot of alcohol the night before or lots of caffeinated drinks the morning of as those are diuretic and will cause you to lose body fluid and become dehydrated.

Finally, you may want to trim your toenails and wear good socks (wool or synthetic; cotton is not recommended) and proper footwear. This is not the type of hike to break in a new pair of shoes or boots. Moleskin on your feet can be very helpful in preventing blisters from forming and ibuprofen (I call it Vitamin I, lol) can help with pain.

Hope that helps. See you there!

Third, the weather forecast is currently predicting a high of 93 degrees, so I would recommend you bring a brimmed hat, sunscreen and lots of water and/or sports drink. It's better to have too much than not enough.

I generally take 32 oz for each 4-5 miles on flat terrain, so I will be taking 4x this quantity, possible more given the load I plan to carry and the temperature. This is what works for me. You may be different. If you perspire a lot, you may need to increase your intake further.

In your fluid mix, I, personally, recommend you bring along at least one bottle of a sports drink (e.g., gatorade, powerade, etc) to help replenish your body with electrolytes so you don't cramp up.

For those of you that do not hike a lot or have never hiked long distances before, I'd like to make a few suggestions in the spirit of being helpful.

    First, please come prepared!

Second, be sure you're in good health. If you've never hiked 17 miles before, it can be a shock to your system. Expect your feet and muscles to be tight and sore afterwards and for the next couple of days. Bring along a pair of comfy shoes you can change into after the hike.

What about food? Any where we can get food in the park? If not do we need to bring whole day's food?

      May 14, 2013

    • Mary

I don't think there's any food at the park. This hike will probably take 8 maybe 9 hours depending on breaks. I plan to bring two small meals and snacks

I volunteered for a walking contest at work today, and I asked if it included the weekend of May 18. They said yes. I said that was good since I was going on a hike that weekend. They asked me how far we were hiking, and I said 17 miles. One of my co-workers asked me how long it takes to hike 17 miles, and I said one day. My other co-worker asked if my car was broke. I said, 'no it wasn't'. He said, 'no, really I'll give you a ride if you need one'. I guess it takes a special person to want hike 17 miles. :o)

In addition to water and food, folks might want to bring mole skin...if you're over 40, you also might want to bring Advil. I usually take some before we event start. :o)

Anyone interested in car pooling from either west Houston or Katy area? Tom, you interested? Sugarland isn't THAT far.

    April 10, 2013

    • Mary

I'm a little reluctant to car pool for this trip because we're coming from Bay City; and I want to make sure I get there on time. Every detour we take brings a possible delay.
